Dating from the high Middle Ages, this beautiful former church now serves as a large and very well equipped bookstore. It also houses a cafe. Well worth a visit even if you're not a book lover.

Located near the St Servaas Basilica, the Vrijthof is a suitable centre for an attractive city, a square made famous through performances by a Maastricht favourite son, the violinist and conductor Andre Rieu and his orchestra. When we were there the Christmas installations were just being removed, so that the square did not look its best.

This old Roman style basilica is one of the landmark buildings in the city. The side chapel with madonna statuette is still a center of Roman Catholic believers revering Mary. There always seem to be devotees.

The main structure of the building dates from the 11 and 12th centuries which is very old by Dutch standards and explaining why the church was built in Roman style. The small windows do not let in a lot of light. The low curved arches attribute to the robust monumental apperance of the building. From some distance, facing the West facade the church almost looks like a bastion.

Named for the patron saint of Maastricht, St Servaas is an imposing building with a crypt that houses the remains of the saint and a treasury that contains some remarkable religious artifacts. We were fortunate to be able to listen to the organist play. A splendid mixture of Romanesque and Gothic, this church is certainly worth your time. In my view, however, it takes second place to the city's OLV Basilica.

A working medieval-era water mill right in the centre of Maastricht? Well, this is definitely one sight that you would not ordinarily see in a city centre. The Bisschopsmolen (Bishop's Mill) has been around for close to 1,000 years, dating back to the 11th century and is the oldest still-working water mill in the Netherlands. Located in the Jeker quarter within a short walk from the Basilica of Our Lady, the mill also houses a bakery and a small eatery. Although the eatery was closed when I visited. I still managed to view the mill's water wheel by following the alleyway to the back of the building. This place is a convenient stop-over as you make your way to Helpoort (Hell Gate) from the city centre.

A crucial element to Maastricht's charm is the city's commendable effort to retain and preserve its medieval structures. Nothing epitomises this more than the stretch of the historic city walls and city gates skirting the city’s fringe, and the most well-known city gate is none other than Hells Gate (Helpoort) which dates back to the 13th century, making it the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands. Its instagrammability itself is a reason to pay homage to this national monument, let alone its rich history and epochal architecture.

A square brimming with life throughout all days and evenings. During market time you could feel the pulse of the local population. The market is interesting in itself.

I spent close to three hours here on Sunday, and left feeling a bit let down. The most interesting and informative exhibition was about the Seven Deadly Sins, illustrated with works from the "long sixteenth century", running from 1450 to 1650, and accompanied by lots of commentary that linked the period to our own. The exhibitions of current work was underwhelming. Ditto for the exhibition of medieval religious wood carving.

A wonderful old historical bridge in Maastricht, from the 12th century I believe. It was a shame the Nazi’s blew up a section at the end of WWII to prevent it being used to cross the river Meuse by allied forces. Fortunately, they rebuilt the new section so ships can nu be accommodated down the river, as there was no way for them to get past the old medieval bridge in its original state.

We visited this with a group and had Rene Brouwers (appropriate name for a guide in a brewery :-) =Brewer in Dutch) to show us around.
    fascinating really !
it is a trip back to the past and very vivid and colourful. the buildings are vaste and astonishing, packed with history and also a treat for Non Beer lovers.
you see all, from the malt to the bottlery and even can see the private house where the last heir of Bosch lived until 2008 !

at the end, of course, some beer tasting is possible in a very nice historic room, de Ridder zaal, named after the previous competition of the Bosch Brewery (funny, but logic, this is a non profit house and the Ridder Brewery is gone forever including the buildings etc and here some of their treasures are honoured with respect in this hall)

go and visit, it is worth your time and you help the volunteers and the foundation to keep improving and keeping this heritage.
