- Foreign-ManSt. Louis40 contributionsThe profound legacy of this Cathedral, both beautiful and sobering, when considering it was created before the Industrial Revolution---and done so over centuries. One can only imagine how this imposing place of worship would impact a population the largely unlettered, with little if any education. No doubt the awe (and fear) entering the Carmo Church would elicit was intense for someone of the 16th century. The gulf between the palatial ornamentation and the hard lives of the people worshiping centuries ago was vast. My son and I walked out filled with thoughts of what a lofty, powerful symbol of Christianity this must have been in the past.
