This is one of the best presented museums I have ever been in, on a par with Shanghai Museum.
Take the hour or two to wander this great museum-so helpful in understanding the strategic importance of the island, plus some really fascinating artifacts and history.

While in Flores I would highly recommend a visit to this whaling Museum, it provides a good look into the history of whaling in the Azores and is very well done with very good presentations.
If you can put aside your aversion to anything to do with whaling and cast your mind back to the late 1800s and appreciate this for what it was, as we did, then you will enjoy this Museum.

The scrimshaw museum was very informative and worth a visit to see the history of a dying art form (I'd rather see the whales with their teeth).
The Scrimshaw Museum is unforgettable - we were amazed at the skill of the artists, but also moved by their sentiments about being away from home and family.

Visited the museum in November 2015, we were the only visitors, it's one of those places where you can touch weaponry, take lots of funny pictures and also learn lots of facts.
The museum space is a good size, through fun little tunnels into each display room.

After visiting the museum, go back down hill, turn left (west) and take first right to drive the coastal road along the point (Ponta dos Biscoitos) to see the historic rock-walled vineyards along the coast.
Wonderful visit to the wine museum!

When our tour guide learned that my ancestors emigrated from the Azores to the United States, he customized our tour to include a stop at this museum.
Here you'll meet a very friendly and helpful staff that will guide you through the Museum and help you with any questions you'll have.
