Very nice view from the bridge! You can see over the river and also the Ribeira restaurants and port houses.

The bridge is also easy to acces from the city center by foot.

You could describe the Douro River in many ways - the very essence of Porto’s existence, or the lifeblood of the Douro Valley which gave birth to Portugal’s acclaimed vineyards. No matter how you view this majestic river, you can’t deny that there’s something special about this river. With a total length of almost 900 km, most of which is in its originating neighboring country, Spain, the best part of the river is the section in Porto’s historic centre, whereby its beauty is amplified by the colorful building terraces on both sides of the river banks as well as the elegant bridges connecting both sides of the river. I am indeed mesmerized by the beauty of the river, especially during sunset when viewed from the upper deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge.

Cais da Ribeira is the quayside area running along the banks of Douro River and is part of Porto's historic heart designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond its touristy first impression, this bustling commercial area is still worth a stroll as you head from Praca de Ribeira to the Dom Luis I Bridge and the Funicular dos Guindas. Even if the crowd and buzz does not excite you, there is still much to appreciate in this area, in particular the beautiful River Douro and the pastel-colored buildings along its banks. So, take in the sights and bask in Porto's timeless charm as you relive the bygone medieval era when this place was once a busy harbor and the city's economic engine.

All European cities with an old historic town must have the obligatory old cathedral with a bell tower. And so it is with Porto, with the iconic Torre dos Clerigos bell tower attached to the monumental Clerigos Church. In comparison to the other medieval cathedrals, this Baroque-style structure is relatively new, having only been constructed in the mid-18th century. When we were there during the winter months, getting a ticket at the counter was a fairly quick process. The Euro 8 ticket provides access not only to the tower, but to the church and small museum housing religious artifacts and paintings. The 240 steps it took to reach the top is not the most daunting. But expect congestion and some jostling for photo spaces once you're at the top. At the height of 75 metres, the tower naturally dominates Porto's skyline, so you would expect a breathtaking panoramic view once you reached the top. The commanding view of the city's red-roofed buildings below certainly did not disappoint, although its most iconic structure, ie. the Dom Luis I Bridge, was completely blocked by other buildings. Even if you are only in Porto for a day-trip, climbing up the Torre dos Clerigos is definitely a must-do in your itinerary.
