- pdunne2017County Dublin, Ireland2 contributionsLovely atmospheric boutique cinema!
I was a little wary of going to see the Third Man in this really old cinema (opened in 1912) based on some reviews I had read but was SO pleasantly surprised - it is a little national treasure!
It was spotless and the seating was comfortable and clean.
This is literally THE best place to see The Third Man on planet earth!
I can't recommend it enough.
The staff are friendly and the popcorn and white wine were just perfect for an old fashioned evening at the cinema.Written June 2, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Comfortable and good value, though I didn't rate the coffee that I had just before the film, though the foyer is comfortableWritten October 18, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SharyVienna, Austria171 contributionsI always like to come here as it is conveniently located and they show films in English. If you book online, you can also just stroll into the cinema with just a small ticket check and without having to queue for a ticket-pickup, which is very convenient as well.
Been here several times and while it is not the most modern place or the biggest, it is usually a really good experience.
Unfortunately, yesterday's evening show was an exception (hence the 1 point deduction) as there was a bunch of kids with only one adult who was NOT supervising. Several mobile phone screens of that party were on during the whole show, you could hear (and see) them texting AND receiving messages with a loud ping noise... They were also constantly talking (and I don't mean whispering, I mean regular volume at least) and couldn't sit still for even 5 minutes. Additionally, they didn't just get up to go out once during the show but several times - every time stomping their feet loudly and yelling, disturbing anyone else who was trying to enjoy the film. There was a severe lack of adult supervision and reprimandment the whole time and there were no staff members around to deal with it either! :(
I really wish there was more staff supervision and that the group disturbing the fairly full room would have been removed quietly.
Apart from that experience, this is still the cinema of my choice in Vienna.Written July 20, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. From the outside, the entrance with the mirrors, the posters, the tiny kiosk, the inside, all beautiful.Written January 20, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ivan ŠZagreb, Croatia49 contributionsEvery cinephil should visit AFM. Not just to see excellent movies (which are very strong reason to go there) but to feel the atmosphere of better times and more relaxed times... At the AFM you can have a decent cup of coffee, buy different memorabilias (books, DVDs, posters etc), become a member of the Museum, carry out a research but eventually and unfortunately at one point you must leave the place.Written December 11, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tinwoodsman_OzMelbourne, Australia254 contributionsWe are musical theatre fans on holiday in Europe from Australia. We are fans of Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked, and noticed the flyer to this show, whilst we were in Vienna. We noticed Schwartz composed the score to this German musical and decided to attend. We were able to book good seats only a day or two prior on a weeknight.
English subtitles are available for non-German speakers on screens on the sides of the stage so you understand every word said. However, it is best not to be too distracted reading them as you miss the action on stage.
The show tells the story behind the creation of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute from the perspective of Emanuel Schikaneder and his wife Eleonore. Emanuel wrote the libretto for the opera.
The songs are catchy, the comedy is accessible and the costumes are dazzling.
Overall an enjoyable evening's entertainment.Written June 14, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Showing the most exciting films of todays Arthouse-world, aswell as retrospectives and special-screenings of classics, the Gartenbaukino is a real treat for film-lovers.The screen is huge, the architecture pleasent, the catering nice. Sometimes there are also film-related parties in the foyer. It's great that the cinema is still there, and i hope it will be there forever, forever ever.Written January 9, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MahssaTehran, Iran802 contributionsI spent a pleasant evening there watching "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". The movie has was pretty small, but quite normal as I wanted to watch the original English version.
I must Say that the pop corn was also good.
It's a quiet cozy movie theater in heart of historical part of Vienna.Written September 7, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Not the restaurants fault though. The food however was very good, nothing fancy but all very tasty.Written September 18, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RodusNottingham, UK69 contributionsWhilst visiting Vienna, we went looking for a restaurant off the beaten track, we didn't need to go far as this place is only a short walk from the museum quarter.
The decor is old world and does not look as if it has not been changed in year, although it is very clean and interesting. The staff are very attentive and help to explain the menu. We went for lunch and it looks like local business men use this establishment, a clue to how nice the food is.Written December 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I have only good words to say about it, and I believe it's good value for money. It's a simple, clean, decent hotel with friendly staff, situated in a neoclassical building near Burgtheater. Its greatest advantage is that it's situated 2 minutes away from the metro station(Burgtheater) in a quiet and lovely neighborhood, so you can directly take the train from the airport and be there in 20-30 minutes.
The rooms are a little bit small, but very clean, cosy and newly decorated. The bathroom is small also, but very clean.
As far as the breakfast is concerned, it's really something. The buffet consists of three large tables filled with almost everything you can immagine: milk, tee, coffee, 3 kinds of ham and cheese, various home-made marmalades, butter, sweets and cakes, yogurt (2 or three kinds), and even sausages grilled at this instant. Do try the delicious round little breads, typical of the Austrian cuisine, you'll love them!
I think it's worth staying there, because you can enjoy all the aforementioned features at a really low price (we paid 100 Euros per night). Plus, your in the center of the city and you are within reach of all the famous monuments of Vienna.Written July 5, 2007This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Easy to locate on Schwarzenbergplatz and most definitely well worth checking outWritten June 6, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Ilias KVienna, Austria2 contributionsUnfortunately the only IMAX theater that serves movies as they should be: in ENGLISH.
Really small IMAX screen and audio is not up to par. Seating is also a little cramped but not the worst.
The place in general has a terrible layout and is not a nice experience. Wish that other cinemas like DonauZentrum or Millenium city would get over the weird thing that is German dubs and also include just a few, not a lot, OV viewings in IMAX because their screens are almost double Apollo's.
Not recommended, unless you absolutely have to.Written March 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
