Alba is a truly beautiful place, not too crowded and very laid back.
As we were staying in the centre, we walked through the old town every day in every direction.
Great to see old buildings in fabulous condition and no roads dug up!

Just driving around the area is a real treat.
From Alba we drove out to Barolo one day, then Barbaresco the next.
The countryside is of course covered in vines on rolling hills.
The backdrop of the Alps makes for spectacular scenery.

Very well organized. I recommend choosing an early entry time, as it gets crowded at lunch and after.

The Cathedral dominates the Piazza Risorgimento, also know as Piazza Duomo, in the centre of Alba.

The Cathedral has origins dating back to the 6th century however the layout of the current Cathedral is largely Romanesque dating from the 11th/12th century.

Subsequent renovations in the late 15th/early 16th century transformed the facade into a Gothic style. These renovations resulted in the demolition of all but the bell tower, the three portals, the facade colonnade and the crypt that existed in the earlier 11th/12th century church.

Further substantial renovations and stabilisation works were carried out following earthquakes in 1626 and also during the 18th and 19th centuries. A large part of the interior artwork and frescoes has been completed since 1871.

The exterior is red brick Gothic in style with three sections and three arches, separated by embedded pillars, opening onto the colonnade and corresponding to the three internal naves. Above the central arch is a statue of San Lorenzo and above this a large rose window. On the lateral sections either side of the central section, there are two large lancet windows. In each of the four embedded pillars there are reliefs showing the symbols of four saints (dating from the mid 19th century). Each embedded pillar is also topped with a type of enclosed turret. The Bell Tower was substantially renovated in the late 15th century, is approximately 45 metres high and exhibits four different styles of windows.

The interior is divided into three high naves with four spans each in the shape of a Latin Cross. The cross vaults of the three naves are painted a rich blue and white, as if it were a starry night, with the arches dividing them from each other resting on bicolour pillars.

There are six beautiful chapels, three in each of the lateral naves, filled with wonderful paintings, altarpieces and, in some instances, masses of marble and gilted ornaments. The majority of the ceilings in these chapels are covered with frescoes.

The elevated very impressive high altar sits above the crypt and is Baroque in style. Behind this is the 35 wood stalls of the choir which were carved in the early 16th century. There are numerous beautiful stained glass windows at the back of the high altar and also surrounding the lateral naves and the counter facade which also houses the organ which dates from 1876.

Excavations have uncovered a baptismal font from the sixth century and this may now be viewed via a glass opening in the floor.

Well worth a visit. Free to enter.

For a small church in a small town, this is quite impressive. It has some relics of some saint....neveer sure about these claims.

I have visited several wineries, in different countries. Overall, this visit was very informative and good. The view from the hills there are very nice. We tasted four wines (one white and three reds, among which one Barolo DOCG and one Barolo Gran Cru). They charged us the price of the visit (25 euros) even if we bought some bottles of wine. The wines were good, but I have found better wines in other wineries, especially given the prices of the bottles here. The tasting lacked a bit of organization since they opened the bottle at the time of the tasting. So we tasted them without having time for the wine to "breath" a bit. But still the visit was worth it.

We were at this wonderful winery with a group of college friends. We all enjoyed the fabulous wine and knowledgeable hostess. She was able to clearly explain the process at this beautiful winery in a way that was full of humor and easy to understand for Americans. The wine was so good that some members of our party had it shipped home. As you make your drive through the vineyards to the winery, it is easy to see why the area is a UNESCO World Heritage site!

Fascinating look as some of the excavations that have been done of Roman and more recent ruins. Led by a graduate student or archeologist, but only in Italian. The brochure they hand out is available in English and has good detail.
