What travellers are saying
- andiamociprestoVancouver, Canada76 contributionsThis is a delightful, paved bike route. The final leg into Lienz station has a dedicated bike ‘road’ under the train tracks, and the elevators in Lienz Station fit people and their bikes. Very bike friendly.
Recommended to go from San Candido to Lienz, not just because it is downhill, but because there so many cyclists going this direction, that to bike the other way is probably frustrating, and according to the tourist office, dangerous.
Most people leave mid morning and return by train in the afternoon or evening.
Some trains have dedicated spaces within the passenger cars (and have a few more stops), and others have a separate train car just for bikes (fewer or no stops).
The return train journeys in the afternoon generally have dedicated rail cars just for the bikes, and the bikes are transported stacked beside each other with no protection or support. It’s a big empty boxcar filled with bikes. Absolutely fine if you have a beefier bike, but a delicate carbon fibre road bike frame may not do so well.
If you have a valuable road bike and don’t want it crushed in with heavy e-bikes, then a morning departure generally means you can take a nearly empty train back to San Candido, and have your bike beside you in the passenger car. We used our helmets to attach the bikes to the metal post, but the ride was so smooth that we probably did not need to. The trains that take bikes generally leaving 1x per hour.
We were on the path by 7 a.m. and virtually had it to ourselves. We arrived in Lienz and had 1-2 hours to visit Lienz, and then took the 10:50 train back to San Candido.
By 11 a.m., when we were on the train back to San Candido, the bike path was packed. People are there to enjoy the scenery, and have a tendency to stop without warning, bike across the middle of the path (i.e. into oncoming riders biking from Lienz), three abreast etc…
Highly recommended, but if you want a quieter experience, the early a.m. is fantastic.
There are limited number of bike spaces on the morning trains, but even in August everyone got on with their bikes. We arrived 25 minutes before train departure and it was easy to find a place for our bikes beside our seats.
I was also told that if you rent your bike at the Station, you can pay an extra fee to drop it off in Lienz and come home bike free.

I visted during the busy period, in June, however there were lots of snow so few people enjoyed the long walk - so after walking to the Tre Cime there were not too many tourists on your way.Written January 20, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I took some very good pics and spent quality time with my wife. I highly recommend spending at least half a day cycling here. Next time we’ll try to reach the end of the trail till Leinz. There’s a train I think every half an hour that you can catch to go back to San Candido (cause the other way is of course uphill!)Written September 19, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - kangeliniHong Kong, China1,451 contributionsReally enjoyed coming up here with our baby daughter. The area is so family friendly. We walked the giant's reign (regno del gigante baranci), visited the gnome village (zwergendorf) and had lunch at the rifugio right next to the chairlift. Can't wait to come back when my daughter is a little olderWritten July 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Savvas123Warsaw, Poland691 contributionsThis is a lovely small town in the middle of the Italian Alps. Its piazza is very nice and relaxing. You can enjoy a walk, or eat at one of the many restaurants around, or simply have a drink. There are also oppotunities for good shopping... I definitely recommend it.Written July 19, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

It is extraordinary to find such a display of wealth in a small church in a small town. It was a cold day when we visited but inside the church felt even colder so we didn’t linger as long as we might have to take in the riches on view.Written October 28, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KvkThe Hague, The Netherlands62 contributionsWe had a great couple of hours in the gnome village and surroundings. Take the chairlift up and explore Haunold mountain. The gnome village is full of small inventful houses, tree forts and other buildings, each with something special and interesting inside. Both our 1- and 2-year old enjoyed it a lot. In the direct surroundings are the mountain restaurant, two small shallow pools shaped like giant's tracks, a tubing station and the funbob down the mountain (ID required, also for children).
The giant's walk close-by takes about 1-1,5 hours and brings something fun every 200m or so. It does go steeply downhill though; doable with a young child that can walk well and/or a buggy (larger/all-terrain wheels recommended and only in the indicated clockwise direction).Written June 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
