As a Perth kid growing up in the 1970’s we would always wake up before sunrise to watch the start of The Hardie-Ferodo 500 which was an endurance motor race open to Group E Series Production Touring Cars. The race was held early October at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales with household names like Peter Brock, Allan Moffat & Colin Bond with such cars as Torana XU1s, L34s, A9Xs, Monaro 350s, Charger 770s & Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 3s.
Then in April I drove past a sign in Bathurst on my way to Mayfield Gardens that pointed to Mt Panorama then the next thing I knew I was driving down to Legendary “Conrod Straight” leaving the big Mount Panorama Bathurst sign behind me at the top of the hill, “Talk about Living the Dream “👍

Abercrombie House was built in the 1870’s by the Stewart Family and was purchased by the Morgan family in 1969, the Morgan family had immigrated from England where they lived in a large manor house so they were used to managing a large property. The Morgan family has spent the last 50 years restoring and maintaining the property including the huge gardens, it must be a mammoth job. They no longer go out in search of items to fill the property, their full time job now is tourism so when they get a spare moment they take care of the maintenance. The house is also often used for public functions and private events.

The NMRM is located at the entrance to the great Mt Panorama race track. It looks like a small building from the front, but has a treasure trove or racing memories and history inside.
Whether it's motorbikes (racing since 1938!) or cars (since 1963), there's something here for you.
As someone who has watched the Bathurst 1000 since the early 70s, this was a real trip down memory lane. It also provided a few surprises looking at the winners of the first seven or eight years of car racing.
All the major winning vehicles are on display (either replicas or restorations) and it's amazing to think about some of the early winners and they cars they drove.
There are also some cars that have participated in the 12hr and 6hr events, as well as many of the major motorcycle races over the years. If you're a speedway fan, there are even some of those on display!
Even if you're not a motor racing fan, this will still be of interest just from a local history aspect.

Absolutely worth the visit. We camped two nights and really enjoyed the walks and caves. Hot showers and toilets. And taps in the camping area. Lovely creek with great swimming holes. Loved seeing the stars at night. Worth the visit

I was asked how did Bathurst go this year? My answer was it was conflicting! At least a Ford didn't win, was the first thing that came to mind as a Holden man. But the race is lacking that spark of years gone by! Having first visited in 1972 and over 40+ visits since the celebrations were muted to say the least. A huge crowd attended so space in the campsites & at the track were limited. Tree growth has finally covered up our view of the large TV screen, so following the progress was a bit harder then usual. Plus the food sources have been moved from Skyline and the choices were few. Not too sure if the Great Race will still be calling me in the future?

The home of former Prime Minister Ben Chifley & his wife, Elizabeth has been maintained as it was when they were in residence. The education centre has some wonderful exhibits and information about the Chifley's, their families and life in the Bathurst region.
The home is only accessible with one of the guides via the education centre. Out guide, Lynette, has an extremely deep knowledge of the home and region. She also recommended Miss Traill's House following our visit here.
Life in the first half of the 20th century is clearly seen through visiting Chifley
Home. There are so many items either preserved or restored to give you the authentic feel of life in that time.
Learning about Mr &Mrs Chifley and their contributions to the local region, as well as Mr Chifley's contribution as our first post-WWII Prime Minister is a must for anyone who wants to know more about Australian history.
Very low entry fee (which is used to help maintain the houses) and a great place to take school aged children.

Being familiar with the history of the historic home, through some of my own research, hearing and seeing the DVD, which is available for viewing on tours, was very interesting and, helped to paint a picture of those who knew Miss Traill. Insightful in this regard. Have been previously, but the DVD is something that really makes memories live on in an engaging way. With writing all around paintings, and photos, illustrations, etc, the tour itself covers the lesser known, but, interesting quirky aspects of the building and its significance, and, it is also an opportunity to ask questions. The volunteers there are always sharing what they know, about each room and the contents within it, and, with more people coming to this enchanting, fascinating grounds, the respect for the building and its relevance to noted individuals connected to it, will only be felt more widely! Some portraits there are also, perhaps, one might say, potentially an only copy. Therefore, there are many reasons to come and have a look for yourself.
