We purchased a ‘self guided’ tour via an app, which allowed us to enjoy the national park at our own pace, but with a virtual ‘guide’ to keep us informed. The sights within the park are truly magnificent - on both a large and a small scale, and it must not be missed if you are on the island.
A couple of tips …
1) You’ll need an entry pass - it is easier to purchase online before your visit. You need one per car, or one per person if not arriving by car.
2) It’s worth getting here early - you’ll get the first few stops pretty much to yourself and you’ll stay ahead of the crowds.

Many of the gardens we've visited rely on large beds that are changed out and are highly groomed for each season. This garden feels like plants were put in decades ago and left to thrive. It has a wild feeling to it and is in the best natural setting of any formal garden we've visited.
I also highly recommend the scenic drive to get there and then a drive north up the coast. Really beautiful! BRING bug spray. We forgot and got eaten alive. One of very few completely soft, white sandy beaches on the Big Island that we have found. Quite crowded and busy but there is plenty of room for everyone. Quite a few turtles swimming around the rocks. Showers to rinse off, and bathrooms at the entrance. The water was amazing. The sand is clean. The facilities are outstanding.
There are a couple of life guard towers on this beach, making this beach possibly safer than others.
The only downside to going to Hapuna is that you have to pay for parking and for each individual visitor. Most visitors to the falls did not see the tree, which was unfortunate, because it's impressive.
