- AllanJGJWellington, New Zealand4,427 contributionsObviously it's pretty compulsory to visit the great Haghia Sophia when in Istanbul. However since it was returned to being a mosque in 2020 non-muslims cannot get onto the floor of the mosque so it is impossible to get a feel for the majesty and mystical feel of the building. The wander around the second floor is interesting enough to merit a visit, including a small number of frescoes but a visit pre-2020 would surely have been far more impressive. I must say as a frustrated historian I always look at these sites in terms of what happened there and what people did there. Thinking like this I am a little saddened as all I can see is the Sultan Mehmed II 'the Conqueror' striding into the great church at the end of May 1453 amidst all the death and destruction and declaring it a mosque and thus ending the 1400 years of the roman empire. One of the most decisive moments in all European history.Written March 18, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steve_Grant1Oldham, UK1,874 contributionsThis is an excellent site and a must visit whilst in the city. You will need to make sure you have allocated at least 3 house for your visit as the site is extensive. Only downside for me was the lack of food options as we were there over the lunch period. We picked up a cup of tea and some crisps from a small van.Written March 23, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paul BThirsk, UK1,044 contributionsWe had to time our visit to the mosque so that it fell between times of prayer. There is a dresscode for this attraction (make sure ladies have scarves or similar to cover their hair) which wasn't particularly onerous. Shoes also have to be removed before you enter the building and can then be placed in special racks.
The building is very beautiful with lots of spectacular decoration.Written March 27, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AllanJGJWellington, New Zealand4,427 contributionsHaving visited a number of Istanbul's large mosques this one was definitely my favourite. Had the feel of a working place of worship rather than predominantly just a tourist attraction. Beautiful inside and out. The carpets were lovely with clearly-marked parallel lines for the worshippers. A whole complex with grounds and other buildings. And of course the tombs of Suleyman the Magnificent and his beloved Roxalana. Read about this fascinating power couple before you go to pay your respects at their burial place. A little bit away from the central area but only a 20-25minute walk. Good to combine it with a visit to the Grand Bazaar. Definitely should be on your list of attractions when in Istanbul.Written March 24, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steve_Grant1Oldham, UK1,874 contributionsThis is a very nice palace and grounds. The water front location is very impressive. The only downside for me is that you are not allowed to take photos inside the palace.Written March 23, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tarzan2613Oakland, CA188 contributionsWas here 20+ years ago and it seemed like a rabbit warren of shops selling a wide variety of things—carpets, antiques, calligraphy, fabrics, etc. now it’s full of evil eye trinkets, pashmina shops, lamp stores, gold and jewelry everywhere. There is still the “old bazaar” section which is how the entire place used to be. We still had fun shopping and got some nice things but the setting wasn’t as exotic as before. Still worth doing, just know that a lot of the stuff was probably made in ChinaWritten January 16, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Abovetheclouds2,534 contributionsI come to Istanbul often. Admire the Galata Tower from afar along the Galata Bridge and then walk up to the tower. Wear flat shoes as a lot of the walk is uphill on cobbled uneven flooring. Steep in some parts. The tower is always busy. Not as tall as I thought the first time I went. Lovely to get a coffee or a bite nearby and enjoy the views and atmosphere. Lines to go up are always long. It is very crowded and cramped. Views are nice but so difficult to appreciate with all the people and then getting knocked constantly. Worth doing once.Written March 2, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
