It was challenging to make the dumplings look pretty but they still tasted great either way and it was a fun experience. I also loved exploring the market beforehand to get food for cooking. - Emmet GM2 contributionsI did the jian bing workshop with some of my friends in September. It was a ton of fun! I really enjoyed getting to make as many jian bings as I wanted and getting to both make the dough and cook it on the pan myself. I definitely needed a few tries to get the technique down, but it was so much fun and delicious! Also, the teacher was incredibly friendly telling us about the different ingredients and super helpful with showing us the technique. I'm super excited to try to make my own jian bings at home! From traveling by train to cooking to playing badminton, my wife and I had a fantastic time. Trust me. If you want to actually experience a "day in the life" of someone from Beijing, this is the activity to do. - Sara R5 contributionsHad a fantastic day learning to cook three Chinese dishes and visiting the Temple of Heaven. Terry was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable, chatty and great to be around. He went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. He picked me up at the hotel and a private driver brought us to the Hutong where I attended the cooking class. Terry picked me up after the class and we drove to the Temple of Heaven to show me around. After the tour, he even brought me to another park despite that not being part of the program. - Zy T1 contributionThe experience was drastically different than promised in the description, which did not justify the price of the class.
Instead of going from the very start (picking ingredients and preparing the dumpling filling), the dumpling dough and filling were prepared before we arrived. All we did was to make a few little flat circles to wrap the dumplings, fill them with the filling, and wrap them. All in all, this took maybe 20 min of the 3 hours top.
Unlike the description of the class, we did not get to pick our ingredients from the local market, make the filling, nor cook the dumplings.
The saving grace was that the host family and guide was welcoming and friendly.
