If you're on a tight timeframe, the main temple structure is the only most notable thing within the grounds as other areas can be skipped. Most of the sites are covered with gardens so if you do have time on your hands you could easily spend hours here, ideal for picnics. There aren't many restaurants in the park but prices were reasonable. There's a connection to the metro on both the East and West gates, highly recommended, and no need to pre-book tickets nor use passport for entry.

Impressive, socialist type of building. Huge space, huge assembly room, huge corridors. If you are visiting Tiananmen Square and you have time, definitely visit, Ticket office is on the south side, a big screen will show the rules and the opening time (from 8.15), closing varies.Self tour, no guide is provided, you buy the ticket (30 Y) and go.

We had a very good time in the museum. It is a very interesting place to discover the evolution of Beijing. The 1st floor is great with good translation in English, then more difficult on the 2nd floor. But do not stop there, the 3rd floor will give you the helicopter view over Beijing (amazing). Look at the size of the Hutong!.
Quick tips, do not forget an ID / passport. Entrance was free.
You might also consider (for once) to stop at the shop of the museum (good place to find souvenirs)
