We stayed overnight for 1 night on our way to Lingshan Mountains. Lovely little local village with some interesting sights. Great area to stay to explore the surrounding mountains and villages. Many different dried fruits on offer.

Entrance fee CNY50 per person and we paid another CNY200 in total for an onsite guide to bring 3 of us around and tell us more about the temple.

先有潭柘寺,后有北京城。This temple was built 1,700 years ago, making it older than Beijing itself. It's well hidden by the mountains surrounding it, so it can't be seen from the highways below, adding a mystical holy vibe to it. The temple boasts 2 千年银杏树 (Ginko trees), one is 1,300 years old and the other 1,000. What's unique is that while both trees are side by side just a few meters apart, 1 turns yellow (and wilts) before the other because the sunlight shines from one side. There's a saying the 1,300 year old one on the right side is the 帝皇树,because interestingly, a new trunk grows whenever a new Emperor takes over, and a branch breaks when an Emperor passes. Hence the other is known as 配皇树, symbolising the Empress.

We got to see the huge deep pots used by the monks to cook food and many other interesting facts (like the Dragon and Tiger pavilion where the Emperor played poetic games with the Officials, the holy fish that people were queuing to touch at 龙王殿, the 百事如意 stone etc). We also checked out the 西观音洞to view and pay respects to the 肉身 (mummified body) of one of the monks that lived here once.

This place is a bit hard to reach with public transport. But the place is very serene and seem to give you the feeling that you are back in ancient China. The background of this village was that it had produced 6 (if not mistaken, maybe more or maybe less) shortlisted scholars during the ancient China imperial ruling. I have a cousin who drove me here. So, I can't really shared what public transportation mode is available. I did asked about a private car service (just in case my cousin can't fetch me) and the cost is quite expensive at around RMB800.

Today I visited the Great Wall @ Badaling. It is extremely touristy & even busy out of season. The wall is something special and must be visited. This part of the wall is close to Beijing, and once you have travelled there, you can conveniently reach the top by cable car. The views can be spectacular, although mine was effected by the misty conditions.

This mountain is on the west side of Beijing in Mentougou District. We came here on a Sunday in mid May and the weather was super nice. We took a DiDi from Ponguoyuan for 120 rmb. Ok price when you are 4 people.
You actually drive up and up the mountain to a point where you are at 1000m over sea level. Then we had a look at the temples close by the gate before we walked to the top of the peak of Mt. Miaofeng. It was worth the hike to get to the top. The party is an actual trail in the forest not man made steps so this was a refreshing change from other spots I have visited. We spent a few hours here also had a look at the rose valley but turned out that the roses was not in bloom yet.
For our return we took the but M05 for 2 rmb I think it was from the parking lot back to Pingguoyuan subway on line 1.

I hope this is the right site. We went to Luoyang to see the Longmen Grottoes. It was a good walk and a lot of exercise walking up to see all the Grottoes closer up. It was such a hot day that we decided to take a boat ride back to the parking lot area. It cost less than $2 a person. I would suggest that to anyone, even if it wasn't a hot day, because it is such a nice ride and really gives you a good view of the Grottoes.

Good for a day hike or multi-day hike. 40 km of trails. Beautiful foliage in the fall. Would love to go again. Also, dog friendly!
