Great expeeience of a tall ship from the late 1800s. Very important in Chile's maritime naval history. Ask for an english guidebook if no tours are available.

The village and factory were build to subtract and treat salpeter, and is thus located near the place where the stone containing saltpeter was found, in the middle of the desert. Once the natural saltpeter industry collapsed, due to synthetic fertilisers, the town was deserted, as its only reason for existence stopped. Since then the town has slowly decayed, although more recently the decay has been stopped, and some parts are partially renovated. It is thus a mining town preserved, although the housing for the miners themselves have collapsed and disappeared. But the other housing, the hotel, theatre, grocery store where they had to pay with fichas, as they weren't paid in money, but fiches that could only be spent in the town stores owned by the mine company. Also the factory buildings largely remain. Very well worth a few hours strolling through, in the part near the entrance typical objects used in the town are on display, and there is a decent amount of information also in English.

This is a bustling street day and night. You can walk one end of the street to the other in about 15 minutes. The street is flanked on both sides by historical colonial wooden framed homes with amazing balconies. Reminds me of the street in New Orleans. During the day, you can people watch, shop in the temporary stalls, have a nice lunch. The Watch Tower is at the main end of the street and here there are many benches and wide open spaces.

In the night, the streets becomes lively. There are many bars and restaurants with street performers and night shopping stalls.

The side streets are also very interesting to walk around during the day.

The place is far smaller then Humberstone, but still worth paying a (shorter) visit. In one hour you can make a good tour of the place. Don't forget the small museum, which exhibits some nice and authentic pictures of the town, when it was still in use.

The place is amazing but the number of tourist in summer increase a lot, but if you are a good traveler the morning is the best moment to swim in the sea.
The evening is for the shopping in the Zona Franca.
The night in cavancha have shows, street food, kids games and a lot of people. But if you walk around the beach is the perfect moment at every hour.

There are plenty of boats leaving regularly, at least during the summer time holidays. So we left within a few minutes of getting on board. The cruise goes around the harbour, which is not that special, but for the many sunbathing sea lions on the top of several buoys. We were at the right time of the year to also see the medusa, a very large squid (non dangerous they assured us). Near the harbour there are also many pelicans, and from the boat you have a good view over the town. One stop, mostly for Chileans, is the buoy indicating the location were the Esmeralda sunk, taking with it Arturo Prat, one of the great military heroes of Chile. One can visit a replica of the Esmeralda (a museum) near the harbour or caleta.

This is the main square of Iquique, certainly from the perspective of a tourist. The three most interesting buildings are the theatre, the Spanish casino (which never was a casino) and the clocktower. The square itself is quite green and has some running water as well. The Spanish casino was a Spanish men's club, but is now a Spanish restaurant. The square itself has many salespeople as well as benches in the shade, and is always lively.

This is a very wide, Long Beach, It is great for a several mile walk. It is not to populated. The water is cool. It is very safe. There are separate walking and running paths. The sunsets in the summer are some of the most beautiful on earth.
