Like lots of places around the world, a victim of it's own success and expanding fame. It is not what it was 14 years ago. Yes it is still a colonial town with original cobblestone streets but it seems every building is now a restaurant, shop or hotel, not a normal town, not the locals sitting outside their houses chatting of years ago. Saturday night the streets were absolutely packed with people, restaurants full, noise everywhere, the romantic quiet restaurants now swamped with noise. And the owners. Now 10% cover charge, 10% tip, maybe tax as well, all on top of high charges, more than Rio for average food and poor service. At least by Sunday evening lots of day trippers and weekenders had departed and it was once again a more pleasant scenic place, where restaurants had more time to provide a better service, the sights daytime much more attractive and quiet. So the best advice, avoid weekends, public holidays and the busy season.

We came with our tour to visit the distillery and had a little taste. The guy that told us about the different drinks made it magical. It was just more like a simple taste with his imaginary descriptions.

The views from the top are magnificent and are worth the steep hike up to the top.
To get to the start of this hike you can take a boat from Paraty Mirim for 250 reais (return) which takes approx. 20 minutes each way. Make sure you got plenty of water with you as you will need it. The walk to the top will take you between 60 and 90 minutes depending on your fitness. It's best to wear proper shoes for this hike. I wouldn't do this walk after it has rained as it would make it very difficult to not slip. You can't really go wrong on your way up as the path is narrow but easy to follow. You walk in shade 90% of the time but there may not be a single breeze until you reach the very top. It's worth the sweat once you stand on the top and look down.

Incredible experience! We are from Rio de Janeiro, come to Paraty for our honeymoon. We saw some reviews of Saco so Mamangua and knew we just had to go. First, you must go to Paraty Mirim by car, it’s a bumpy drive and best if on 4x4 wheels. The road signs and pretty clear and there is really nowhere else to go but the main road. Once at the very end, there are a few places to park your car at about R$20 until 18h. There plenty of captains and boats to chose from, but we most definitely recommend Mateus! He is a young captain, born in one of the islands just off the coast, very experienced and knows every corner of the place. Respectful of our time and would let us very comfortable to enjoy each spot on our own time. All the captains charge the same price because they work together as a very tight community. We paid 800 just the two of us, visited every spot of the Mamangua area, stopped for swimming and jumping rocks, had lunch at Restaurante do Dadico - very fresh fish. Also did an hour hike to Pico Pão de Açúcar, Mateus leaves right at the beach where the trail begins and then will be waiting once your back. Totally worth it!

You can travel from the first beach along through four beaches, Lula beach being one of them. I thought this one was the most beautifful beach of all of them, nice waves and sand. Very blue water. We even spotted turtles when we were there climbing around the rocks.

A unique trip through this beautiful bay and its islands where the lush Atlantic mata meets the blue waters of the bay, a spectacle that you carry in your heart.

Cristal clear waters and sandy beach - perfect place to spend the day doing SUP, tanning or swimming!
Boat costs 20R per person, definitely worth it!

A good beach but make sure you pick a day when not every tour boat is going there . and there is plenty of room for all on the soft white sand and bright blue sea

I love visiting distilleries and this was no exception. We came here during a Pataty Tours cruise excursion. We got to visit the distillery (or perhaps one made for public demonstration) then went into their rural retail store for tastings. We were offered half-shots of 33% brandy of different flavors. They sell everything from mini-bottles to pints and quarts in the store.

We travelled here with a guide who made me feel a bit more confident sliding down the waterfall into the unknown. At the end you hit the water in a slightly chaotic way but it seemed pretty safe.

Really pretty waterfall and rainforest. It can be hot and humid, so take your swimsuit and get in the water. We went here as part of a jeep tour from our cruise ship so didn't get to spend as much time enjoying the scenery and the pools. It can be crowded as it is evidently a "must do" while in Paraty.
