I just spent 1.5 days in Huangshan City, so I seized this opportunity to pay a visit to Mt.Huangshan and an ancient water town - Hong Cun Village. To be honest, it is not enough to visit Mt. Huangshan but you can just enjoy the highlight of this magnificent place. We took Yungusi Cablecar up the mountain and Yuping Cablecar down, Locus Peak is the highest mountain, the steps are so steep that you should be caution when you climb up. The sceneries are so amazing , I lost my words for such a beautiful place. There are several hotels on the top of Mt. Huangshan, maybe is a good choice to stay for one night to enjoy the sunrise in the morning, but the price is not friendly.
It takes approximately 40 - 60 minutes from Mt. Huangshan to Hong Cun village, just a typical water town in China, half day will be enough. One of the most famous dish in Anhui is called stinky fish, be careful to taste it, I don't like it at all.

Got a taxi from Huangshan to the Southgate tourist centre (£20 to save time). Paid £2 for local transfer bus to take us to the yungu cable entrance. Brought tickets at the ticket booth for the entrance and cable up (needed passports). Did a circular walk round the back side of the mountain and watched sunset at Bright top peak. Stayed overnight at the shilin Hotel (good). Got up at 530 to see the sunrise at stone monkey peak, then back to Hotel for breakfast before walking around the front side and down the yuping cable, then transfer bus back to the tourist centre. At the tourist centre caught the bus back to Huangshan North Station (£3).
There are a lot of steps up and down but the views are stunning.

If you didn't get enough steps walking up Mt Huangshan, take this side trip. Approximately 1 hour each way with steeper stairs than you encountered before. Worth it? You bet!

Our lovely guide Echo took us late afternoon to this old street. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants but quite crowded. Worth a look though.

After the Xihei Grand Canyon awesome scenery exploration, we checked in the White Cloud Hotel. Took a shower, had a good
Lunch and started another natural beauty exploration heading to Buxian Bridge. How lucky we were, the overnight raining built up sufficient moisture to let the Mother Nature played the great symphony to have the mist, the fog, the cloud ocean flowing around the awesome mountain peaks. OMG, this morning’s Grand Canyon already shocked me, and now another shock with different kind of natural beauty. Actually, the pictures can only tell very little of this natural beauty. You have to come by yourself with your owns to see such a gorgeous place like an awesome photo after another.

Did not do enough homework to realize how challenge and somewhat dangerous this hiking is. It is an ultimate hiking especially with strong wind. Tian Du Feng is due to close for five years after Dec. 1. Took us almost 2 hours to complete the hiking. The views from the top of mountain is second to none. Ten of 16 us completed the challenge. Three of us gave up right before reaching the top around the turning because it was very strong wind. In addition to the gorgeous views, we were so lucky to see the “Buddha light”. My friend who had been Huangshan 39 times, only saw it once (twice including this trip. The tour guide only saw twice in his 20 some years professional career. It’s a huge challenge and definitely worth hiking to to top. However, don’t push yourself. After all, safety is the #1 priority.

The hot springs are on the more expensive side but are worth the trip in our opinion. There are many different types of aroma pools with varying temperatures. During our visit we tried many different pools and our favourites were the carnation, ginseng and red wine pools! They also had vitamin C (citrus), milk and various floral ones. The temperatures of the water range from 36°C to 42°C.

We tried the hot springs after coming in from Hangzhou via train. There are lockers on site and they provide towels but Bath robes are extra. They do sell swim suits here but we would recommend bringing your own style. The shower facilities are pretty good and there is a steam room too. Due to covid we had to get ourselves pre-approved via our hotel's front desk with our health codes and travel itinerary prior to coming here. There are a few buses that go through Tankou Town directly to the hot springs and cost 11 RMB one way. Our hotel helped us to the bus stop and there is an English speaking manager at the hot spring that helped us get back to our hotel.

It is 178 RMB per person and we spent about 2 hours here in December. In the summer I could see us spending a little bit more time as there are lounge chairs.

Chengkan village has well preserved residential architecture from Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). Chengkan village is also widely known as Bagua Village (八卦) relating to Taiji philosophy that focuses on two aspects – Yin and Yang. This can be seen in a lot of the old residential houses. It is highly recommended that you hire a guide. If you can understand Chinese, then local guides can be hired at village entrance for a small fee of rmb50 (the guide will take you through the village and explain a lot of Fengshui design of the buildings to you. The tour would take around 1 hour and if you want to spend longer than it is another rmb50). The local village has very limited English speaking guide. While you can tour the village yourself, a lot of cultural knowledge is lost without someone explaining. While this is not as tourist or famous as Hongcun and Xidi, it is definitely worth a visit.

If you are visiting China, you will surely see The Great Wall and perhaps the Terracotta Warriors, but Huangshan should be on your China bucket list. There are so many beautiful sights and wonders here. It is crowded but not like the other places I mentioned. Your China trip would feel empty if you don’t visit Huangshan and this peak is very accessible to people with even limited physical abilities.

Nice path leading through the valley. But this season you need to walk all theway to the Green Pearl Pool to see the clear and clean water, as emerald is in your mind!

It is a 10 mins hike from Yuping cable car station. This place is crowded with tour groups. There are few food and snacks stalls. A good place for stop over and toilet break. Many tourists are taking selfies and personal photos of the iconic Greeting Pine, which can be seen from the platform down a few steps. Personally, this Greeting Pine is nothing spectacular as pine trees are everywhere. I think the pine trees at Refreshing Terrace and Black Tiger Pine are much more imposing.

There are a lot of nice architectures and old buildings in the old village. It could be managed better to avoid the merchants ruining the nature of this ancient village. The moon lake was the place that Li An’s famous movie “crouching tiger, hidden dragon” took several famous shoots. Overall, it’s a nice walking tour and quite relaxed.
