What travellers are saying
- Damien BLeigh-on Sea, UK84 contributionsWe stopped by here whilst walking around the local area. We had a nice coffee and watched the locals go about their everyday life. Probably good for an hour or so.Written February 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- WorldbutterflyBerkeley, CA176 contributionsWe had an afternoon to kill in San Jose before our flights out and picked up some great souvenirs at this central art market. It's well worth a trip if you find yourself in the same situation.
Reviews that say the place is full of tourist tack--you're right! Reviews that say you can find amazing, locally produced souvenirs here--you're right! There is truly the full range of products, from cheesy toucan magnets and every single type of "Pura Vida" t-shirt to original work from artists throughout the country. Our favorite stall was the Artesanias Con Identidad Costa Rica, an artist's collective that features work from over 100 local artists. There are handmade coasters, small painting, crochet and needlework, stained glass, textiles, jewelry--so many one-of-a-kind items. The stall is located fairly deep in the market, but not hard to spot because it features items that no one else has. But no matter what your taste you will find it here!Written March 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Conall was very well informed about the art works featured.Written February 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LMA212014Los Angeles, CA17 contributionsIf you are looking for the unique souvenir, this is a MUST place to shop. It is a bit of challenge to find because it's so small but so worth the effort! The guys at the shop were so helpful in describing all the local crafts by region! This is a Free Trade shop which is great to support. I found a hand painted vessel, made from the outside of a local fruit. I collect Christmas ornaments from places we visit and this is one I will be using to remind me of Costa Rica.Written May 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland11,387 contributionsWent here on my first night in San Jose on the advice of my hktel because I was told there would be lots of bars and restaurants here and plenty of choices.
There were. But not all were open. Those that were were pretty nice without being anything special and the prices were far higher than in the town centre.
Nevertheless it was a safe and pleasant place to eat and have a beer and meet fellow travellers. Not a bad option.Written May 29, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I needed something short to do and this fit the bill perfectly, it is a small museum but with an interesting history about a man who made many changes socially and medically for the people of Costa Rica
When I visited, the entrance was free and there was a small exhibition at the back - a somewhat sad and upsetting theme but I understand they change often and this one will be gone in a few weeksWritten October 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This market has so many vendors selling interesting fruits and vegetables that are native to the region. We sampled a number of these and that was a very special part of a lovely experience. Whereas Mercado Central (also worth visiting if you like markets) seems very established, this market seems to be a bit less so. There are also many fewer souvenir shops and more produce stands here. I would check this out when you are in San Jose.Written April 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- poodledoopMA387 contributionsGreat little modern art museum in an old alcoholic drinks factory. The galleries are worth seeing for both the art and the facility.Written August 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
