What travellers are saying
- chewatRobertson559 contributionsMassive and powerful waterfall in a surreal landscape. The volcanic wasteland which surrounds this place is largely flat and gives no hint of the treasure which lies within until you are almost on top of it. A more remote area of Iceland so not so overrun thank goodness.Written May 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RedheadedWandererBrooklyn, NY162 contributionsThe Námafjall Geothermal Area is a really astounding and beautiful area to stop and walk around and marvel at nature. Comprised of several fumaroles, mud pots, and lots of steam that smells like rotting eggs, we were rather surprised that visitors could get as close as they could. There's limited information on plaques when you arrive, so be sure to read up before or bring a guide book with you to explain all what's going on.
The site isn't monitored by any rangers, but there are cameras that photograph your license plate as you come in, so be sure to pay for parking.Written June 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Beautiful scenery lots of places to stop and birdwatching, great walk well signposted in one area, can easily spend several days hereWritten May 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jenny MNorthampton48 contributionsGreat experience here this week. Very nice changing rooms with private and public showers. You shower before you go in.
There are 2 large pools, of different temperatures . It was very relaxing , great view and natural.
You can buy drinks when you enter at the desk and they give you a wrist band to collect the drinks from the pool bar.
We didn’t need to take a towel in with us, you can walk the short distance from the pools to steam room/ changing rooms once you are finished. I would advise swim shoes as the floor of the pools are gravelly.
Nice cafe also on site with views of the pool.Written June 3, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Snowed walk to the craters which are beautiful.Written November 2, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RedheadedWandererBrooklyn, NY162 contributionsWe hiked up Hverfjall at 10pm because when you have all that daylight in Iceland in summer, you use it! It's a straight shot up, so it's not difficult, though it will take you a little time. We didn't walk all the way around the rim (which takes about an hour, we read), but we enjoyed the views over the Lake Myvatn area. There's plenty of parking and pay-for-use bathrooms at the bottom.Written June 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - chewatRobertson559 contributionsStunning landscape, nice hike to the lava field although the boardwalk needs some serious repair. The power of nature on full display. Only issue is complete lack of toilet facilities anywhere in the area. There appeared to be a single toilet in the parking area but it was locked. It you don’t want people relieving themselves in inappropriate places you need to lift your game.Written June 1, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sightseer554717104611 contributionLittle bit climbing on the ice and million dollar view after that in the cave. Local tripguide was very funny and intresting person.Written May 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EC13091Ellicott City, MD1,166 contributionsWe really enjoyed our walk here, particularly because at 8am we were the only people here. We walked the easy yellow path to the more challenging blue path. We spent nearly 45 minutes here, enjoyed learning about the Yule Lads, and seeing these unique formations. No charge, except ISK200 to use the toilet.Written May 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- SlabMorris Plains, NJ97 contributionsThese falls are amazing. The basalt columns lining the canyon and the water coming out of the middle of them is a sight to see. Definitely worth the 45 minute drive each way down the gravel road and then on a F-road.
The hike down to the canyon is a bit tricky with some loose rocks and the steepness but once you are down there, the place is a sanctuary.
Love this place and wish I could live there and have that view every morning.Written September 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Now it’s a picturesque crater filled with water. Worth a stop but not the most impressive volcanic feature, either.Written May 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DavidBarbiDebrecen, Hungary77 contributionsA non-exhausting hiking trail leads here. - RedheadedWandererBrooklyn, NY162 contributionsIt's a lovely cave, but these days, it's famous for being the setting of where Game of Thrones' Jon Snow breaks his celibacy vow to the Night's Watch with Wildling Ygritte. You'll need to follow a few small signs to find your way to this small cave. Lots of posted signs remind visitors that you're on private land and bathing in the cave is not permitted. There are two entrances but it's only a few careful steps down to where you can get a look at the cave itself. Mostly you'll marvel at how they made this space look large on the television show and wonder where on earth they managed to squeeze the camera equipment to do so. If you're a fan, it's fun, but otherwise it's a skippable site unless you're in the area and want to stretch your legs.Written June 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dennis EAlphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands165 contributionsVery nice place with a parking lot in front of the entrance. Great place for a quiet walk in the evening and also great for birdwatching. It all looks very fairytailish.Written June 29, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- SESNoVAAnnandale, VA424 contributionsThis small museum has carefully mounted birds from all over Iceland. A great spot to see how many you've already identified as well as to figure out what those little birds in the lake as you entered the museum were (phalaropes).Written October 27, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
