- DigitalNomadDreamLos Angeles, CA18 contributionsI agree with many of the other reviewers that this campus is stunningly beautiful. This is where many movies have been filmed, including The Godfather, Old School, Legally Blonde. One of the most iconic spots on campus is the grassy quad between Royce Hall and Powell Library. Other scenic spots include the Bruin Bear at the foot of Bruin Walk, Tongva Steps, the Sculpture Garden on North campus and the Botanical Gardens on South campus. If you want to avoid the parking costs, which can range from eight dollars to $24, depending on how long you’re there, park at one of the cheaper parking structures in Westwood Village, put on your walking shoes and walk the quarter mile to campus.Written June 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Laura SEl Paso, TX42 contributionsBeyond the sheer beauty of the campus buildings and grounds and the array of learning at USC, USC is a place young adults become the best version of themselves through intellectually growing both socially and emotionally. Students graduate and go out into the world with a world class and respected education to make a difference in whatever career path they choose.Written April 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,598 contributionsWe visited this campus as part of my daughter’s SoCal college tours.
It was a small, private campus situated in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The campus has a nice layout with classrooms centralized around a big plaza like area. It was quiet on this weekend morning but our guide told us it gets livelier when the students wake up or if we came back during the weekday.
Most of the buildings were well maintained with modern classrooms. Some, like the library, was a bit old school with very formal sitting areas, rows of books on dark wooden bookcases, desk lamps, etc. Also here was the first “shrine” to President Obama, who attended Occidental. We were told there were two on campus as they were quite proud of having President Obama as a past student.
There were lots of open areas on campus to hang out along with a soccer field and soon to be finished aquatics building and tennis courts for those athletically inclined. It was an easy walk but some areas like the Choi auditorium and Career Center were up a slight incline as the college was situated on the side of a small hill.
Parking was free for everyone which was quite unusual for a college in LA.
The Marketplace was a top rated cafeteria which was also known for its Vegan offerings. There also was a coffee shop which was owned and operated by the students where a class offered credit for their entrepreneurial experience running the business.Written April 27, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The school has approximately 1200 students and interacts heavily with the LA creative arts and business community.
The school also runs an excellent summer of art program for students not yet in college.
Many professors are professional animators, illustrators, artists, and storytellers. They bring an authenticity to the classroom and students respond accordingly.Written January 6, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The set up for the showcase was well thought out. You could see each person's work and even talk to them about their projects. Nice way to spend the evening!Written June 12, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- TipsandtreatsLos Angeles1 contributionI attended a fundraising event here and had no idea such a beautiful center existed in it's neighborhood. Plaza de la Raza is an afterscool non-profit, they have classes in the visual and performing arts for ages 5-adult and is located inside of Lincoln Park in Los Angeles. (not too far away from downtown)
There was a student art exhibit up at the time in their gallery which was pretty amazing considering the ages of some of the entries. I picked up a catalog and hope to attend some classes soon, their prices are very reasonable! More so than many other places I have looked into, and being able to learn in such a fresh, colorful and dynamic facility makes it even better. I think their site is (--) for more info. Highly recommened and very friendly.Written September 16, 2006This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Undoubtedly some important artefacts and key chronicles of note but the museum mainly centres on key historical figures such as MLK and prominent church leaders which we felt didn't do the rich and complex history of African Americans anywhere near justice. Whilst the exhibits / written commentary does outline the contributions of some significant African Americans in the shaping of the USA and also California since the 1800s, so much was left unsaid particularly in view of the latter 20th and early 21st century.
The museum appears somewhat neglected and a victim of a lack of funding and imagination - you only need to visit the science museum next door to see the contrast (we didn't visit the natural history museum).
Given the tensions in race relations in LA and the U.S. in general, the celebration of and teachings of comprehensive African American history should have its rightful place. A museum alone doesn't fix all social and cultural ills born out of the dodgy social construct of 'race' but a good museum does go some way in challenging and changing perceptions. The museum of tolerance is a notable example.
Disappointing and sad.Written August 6, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
