Third time on Amtrak using their roomette, except this time Amtrak placed the sleeping car right after the locomotive. in the past the sleeper car was in the rear.
The difference is the train horn blasting through the night can be easily heard when you are immediately behind the locomotive.
We found it strange that they set the train up this way. The four of us all had a restless night of sleep.
This review is directed at Amtrak for this specific trip, hopefully this is not the norm in their configuration.
Otherwise do enjoy any trip on Amtrak, it is quite the experience.

Good read for first time travelers. This was my first trip on Amtrak traveling on Sunset/Texas Eagle. From California to Texas. Apparently it’s two different routes combined into one that separate in San Antonio which I thought was a neat concept.

Staff both at the station and on the train were friendly. The LA station was confusing and I sort of just got lucky and found the check in area. Not sure how that works because I took a train and then a bus to get to this station and there was no check in. I guess it depends if it’s a sold out ride.

I had a coach seat. The stuff I read said don’t bother with a room, well the seats are better than airline but I probably would have opted for a room for my leg’s sake. You do have the option to roam around though.

Train arrived on time, but we got hit with a 5 hour delay thanks to a disabled freight liner. This got progressively worse as apparently the track is shared both ways and Amtrak always has to stop and wait for them to pass first. This turned it into an 8 hour delay plus stops for breaks.

I don’t blame Amtrak for this, it’s a train for one, don’t expect to be making deadlines on these things. I do wonder what kinds of regular maintenance freight liners do if any considering the info I got from the crew on board that they break down often. They also said it was the first time they had an issue quite like that this year so just my luck. I would expect freightliners to have regular maintenance considering they get the de facto right of way for whatever reason. Probably wouldn’t need it if they weren’t always breaking down and playing catch up.

Amtrak had everyone get off and use buses after a certain point rather than continuing by train, a lot of people weren’t happy and on their phones looking for compensation or upgrades to their next destination all of which Amtrak declined. I honestly wasn’t really bothered with all that, Amtrak can’t do much about the freights, what I did sort of frown upon though was that Amtrak offered no sort of free meal or even a drink to help meet everyone half way as some of us packed food for the trip. A little something small like that would have gone a long way. None of the buses I was on had working power outlets either which was a bummer. No on switch, and some didn’t have them at all.

The food cart guy was hilarious, best part of the trip.

We booked a private rail car from LA to Portland. Sleeping on a train was on my wife's bucket list. Exceeded our expectations. Food was fabulous! Cheaper than Amtrak.
