- Peter ASyracuse, NY10 contributionsThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a movie, but should be a book sold here and might be an appropriate theme for the review. I would add BEAUTIFUL to that title as well! I love this store for a number of reasons. It has that defiant strength and determination. It remains an anchor to a community that has experienced blight (the BAD). Parts of Main Street in Niagara Falls are empty buildings abandoned (the UGLY) when retail moved to the suburbs, but (and now the GOOD) I've NEVER felt unsafe here whatsoever. I remember walking by the shop a few decades ago, and the window display drew my attention. It was a real find because it is so unexpected! Rest assured you are safe because the huge, relatively new City of Niagara Falls Police Station is right next door, and I am sure that as a long-time member of the community, they look out for this store especially hard! As well, the modern Niagara Falls Amtrak Station and the Underground Railroad Museum are about a block down the street as you leave the downtown and head toward the more affluent and historic Deveaux neighborhood. There is on-the-street parking right in front of the store which had been the main entrance, but a sign directs people to enter near the parking lot behind the store. Inside, WOW, a literary maven's delight, though maybe an archivists' nightmare, unless you are the owner. He has worked here so long that what might seem overwhelming is easily accessible just from his memory. Some may perceive him as a bit quirky, but he is a truly decent person who is passionate about his work. I credit him with keeping the independent book store alive and vibrant in an area that might otherwise be a literary desert. I'm not talking just the immediate area, but all of Niagara Falls and beyond. New or used, you have a good chance of finding it here. The catalog is so vast, many books are not even cataloged. That's what some avid, leisurely browsing and some wonderful serendipity come into play. They do a significant amount of mail order here, orders can be collected, and prices reasonable. It's not a sterile chain bookstore that you can walk into and expect the same experience whether it is New York or Little Rock, but a unique friendly community place that harkens back to "old fashioned" in-person discussion, debate, and shared experience in a quest for knowledge and truth. I say that "The Entire World Seems Encapsulated in This Store" because as soon as you walk in, become engrossed in any topic, you're immediately drawn into the reality of your own mind, and expanding it. You'd have to go to New York (Strand Books) to see anything more expansive in books. Why bother when this might be so close to you, and the parking is free.Written July 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Amanda SKewanna, IN24 contributionsJust your average run of the mill candies. It would be much cheaper to bring your own bag of chocolate from Walmart. Seriously! Those were the candies on the center display. (Twix, Milky Way, etc.) They did offer ice cream but with a cold stone across the street and La Patisserie less than a block away offering gelato, their game needs to be upped.Written June 25, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
