A trip up to Big Bald Mountain is an experience you don't want to miss.
Most of my Bed & Breakfast guests, staying here at Bald Mountain House inside the Wolf Laurel Resort, take a hike on the AT up onto Big Bald. There is private parking just off of the AT and it is only about 1/4 mile to the AT and another ten minutes up onto Big Bald Mountain (Elev. 5,516 ft.). I have had guests go up and back before breakfast in the morning or go for a memorable sunset.
If you do not have access through the Wolf Laurel gate (a private community) the hike is 15 miles round trip from Sam's Gap or 13 miles round trip from Spivey Gap on the AT...all the more reason to be a guest at Bald Mountain House Inn inside the Wolf Laurel Resort.

We’ve been to the tube hill in Maggie Valley and to moonshine mountain, but this one by far is the most fun snow tubing experience for us. It’s so great because they tell you the rules and let you go at your own pace. If you keep at it you can get a lot of rides in. Staff is very friendly and little kids are able to ride here. We’ll be back year after year.

This is one of the best welcome centers I have ever visited. Great views outside & fantastic displays inside.

The I-26 welcome center was exceptionally nice . The bath rooms were very clean and 🐶🐶🐶 dog walk areas clean with plenty of doggie relief bags. The welcome center had plenty of tourist info.

My backpacking partner and I stopped at the Bald Mountain Shelter in the late morning to get water, take a short break, and do a little lunch prep (had to add water to the dehydrated black bean salad and wait 40 minute for hydration before eating). Bald Mountain Shelter is on the Appalachian Trail and is the only shelter between Sams Gap and Spivey Gap about 2.2 miles north of Big Bald, between Mars Hill, North Carolina and Erwin, Tennessee. Water is available at the shelter off a blue blazed trail; don’t stop at the first sign of water; there is a better source a little further down the blue blazed trail. A privy is located behind the shelter, and bear bag cables are located to the front. The shelter is a double decker and sleeps 10.

Website says they are open. They are not. The gate security said they expect to open in mid January for skiing

This was the experience of a lifetime. The stories, the work, the results… all of it was amazing. We forged a tomahawk and a dagger, and we are SO proud of them. Jeremy made the forging so simple, but it’s definitely still a lot of work!! Not recommended for someone with no grip/arm/shoulder strength or a mobile disability in those areas. We were sore the next day, but this was our favorite thing we did our entire trip in NC. They are fantastic people, and it was a great time. SO SO SO cool and unique.
