- Anne BOak Brook, IL32 contributionsA little hidden gem. Stopped in to learn more about area and check out the Community College and found more than what we were bargaining for. What a beautiful vignette of local trees and plants.Written March 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We love the Camelot theme with the wooden castle being the focal piece of the park.Written July 21, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tim S5 contributionsBest little secret in Pinehurst for breakfast. Those in the know usually WANT to tell you about it, but usually DON'T because seating is limited and they don't want you taking their spot. HA HA good eats if you can find it.Written August 15, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ZiziPlymouth, MI7 contributionsWe walked the trails through the wooded area. Visited the gardens by the Village Hall. - Chris WMason, OH155 contributionsA challenging course for all golfers. Sandy areas and wire grass run the length of the fairways, and greens are like inverted saucers-very difficult to hold your approach shot on the green. Truly a classic course.Written April 14, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- John C4 contributionsGreat course, typical pinehurst design of incorporating natural landscape into the course. Pace of play was perfect. Finished the round in 4 hours.Written October 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Steven KSan Sebastian - Donostia, Spain7 contributionsThere are Jason Craighead, Bruce Dorfman, and Jane Filer works galore... in a very beautiful gallery owned by someone who knows these artists personally.
First, you'll be swept off your feet by the kindness, accessibility and beauty of this gallery. Second, the work in the gallery will surprise you. Third, you'll walk out with an abundance of knowledge and a work to stand the test of time.
I was blown away by the experience. I cannot believe there is a gallery at this level this close to my home.
You must go see this outlier in Pinehurst. Cannot recommend it highly enough. (Just don't buy any of the pieces I have my eye on!)Written July 10, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Check in was easy in the small pro shop/19th hole building. Great practice facilities with a relatively small putting green, a large driving range with lots of targets, and a huge short game practice area. The 19th hole had a nice variety of sandwiches and beers.
The course layout generally follows the lay of the land with many target bunkers off the tee and many green-side bunkers. Long hitters need to carefully pick their tees and the clubs off the tees due to the many sharp dog legs and layups. Nice variety in length of holes with many of the par 3's substantially downhill. Most of the greens are relatively flat but a few had huge swales and ridges that made putting interesting and fun.
The course was in good shape for early in the season. The fairways were generally plush but the rough could be more sketchy. The bunkers were in great shape other than the many footprints from golfers that "forgot" to leave the course as they found it. The Bermuda greens were not mowed due to overnight rain so they looked great but were slower than expected.Written April 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Pinehurst corporation bought it and changed the name to Pinehurst #9.
During our visit, the buildings were in the process of being renovated and updated. The restaurant was complete and now has a much better layout. The restaurant food was awesome and the beer selection was good too.
The course has always had an outstanding practice facility with a large driving range and a great putting green on the way to the 1st tee. This is a typical Jack Nicklaus design from his penal period and it favors a fade, has wide open fairways, and extremely difficult green complexes. All of the holes are very memorable and distinctly different. Number 9 is the only Pinehurst course with bent greens and they were in excellent shape.
The course starts off with a very difficult dogleg left par 4 where you need length off the tee on the right side of the fairway to get past the trees and have a shot at the green. Then there is a long water carry par 3. Followed by extremely difficult par 4 and par 5 holes. Number 3 is a sharp dogleg right up the hill to a steep 2-tiered green where you are in trouble if you are on the wrong tier. The par 5 number 4 has an elevated tee with a huge lake on the right. The second shot is across the lake and then the hole goes up hill (so the hole plays very long) with several bunkers and a thin green surrounded by deep bunkers.Written April 13, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Course has been redone and is nice, but play was slow, and had to push our flight back. Five hour round. Caddies were not as good on #2, and course was not as memorable as #2 - could have been because we were tired. Suggest a water bottle that you can refill at water stations, because water is sparse on course.Written September 24, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Scott R1 contributionMy son and I went to experience budget golf in the Pinehurst area after a week of amazing and expensive courses. As we pulled up we were immediately excited about the look of this course from the holes we saw from the road. I had called earlier in the day and the shop pro told me the Grey course was in better condition. Unfortunately by time we showed up they were spraying the greens and were told we had to play the Red Course. On a hot 90 degree day the shop and bar were also out of water bottles. I was offered a glass of tap water in a fancy plastic cup, no ice, but whatever, we came to play golf. The 1st tee box was impressive. We are both single digit handicappers and enjoyed the bunkering and wide fairways. The course offers some AMAZING scenic views and holes and I could immediately tell the layout of this course was special. Unfortunately I couldn't say the same for the conditions. Nice fairways, bunkers hadn't been raked or sanded in months it seemed, and the bermuda greens although somewhat fast were like putting on a plinko board. Insanely bumpy. I told my son I loke the layout so much i wouldplay there all the time if the greens were good! Credit to the shop pro, he told us they weren't great and the Grey Course greens were better. Overall you can't tell this course was special at one time. The architecture is amazing. Feels exactly what Sandhills area golf should be, but they probably just don't have th budget to keep it up, a real shame because it's so beautiful!! No cart girl, closed down halfway house with a broken vending machine, and luke warm water tubs. I will say from the Blue tees this course is a monster at 6800+ yards. We moved up to the White tees after 5 holes and had much more fun. As we finished we drove by the 18th green of the Grey course and putted on it. Greens were furry but
WAY better. Not sure why there was such a discrepancy. It seems like overall Foxfire would be in a much better position keeping 1 course and spending all of its resources making the best course really nice and charging more. I paid $40, but would have easily paid $100 if this place was in better condition. Needless to say this place has SO much promise. Its worth it to play just to appreciate the golf course architecture and to take a break from to $100+ round. Will probably consider bringing the family back on a relaxing day and play the Grey Course. My son and I played in 3 hours and didn't see a single person which was nice. Ice water would have garnered a 3.5 rating...Written June 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We went back to play it again on our golf trip; we needed a feel good game before we returned home.Written October 2, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
