A reasonably short drive (around 1 hour) from Jo'burg airport, north-west of the city's edge is this valley where fossils of Australopithecus have been discovered. The museum built over the top combines an exploration of the caves where the fossils were found, together with some tourist experiences such as a boat ride underground and a swirling tube to walk through. Part of the tour is guided and teaches of the importance of our common ancestry in a sensible way. The views from the ridge above across the valley are well worth the walk up to the look-out and we enjoyed lunch afterwards at the nearby resort's restaurant (a short drive away, not the conference centre next to the museum) which also afforded sweeping views of the valley. Cost-wise it was all very reasonable - 125 Rand per adult. There is a souvenir shop and cafe near the entrance, tours on the hour take about half an hour before the rest is self-guided.

Quite impressive cave and story around the archeological remains found there. The guide tour was very elocuent. The are several school buses coming for a visit during the day with hundreds of childrens; recommend visiting the cave at the start of the morning to avoid crowds.

It was a bummer that the caves were not open, but the Maropeng Visitor Center was fascinating and informative! The littles, 4 and 7 years old, enjoyed it, although the strange boat ride freaked them out! It is worth a visit.

Don't expect a glitzy tourist attraction, this is one of the original South African gold mines. Its all a bit run down but the owner passionately conducts the visits himself and has a huge number of stories to tell and artifacts to show. This is really worth a visit to appreciate a bit what it must have been like to be a pioneer gold miner. This site is constantly under threat from illegal miners and had only recently reopened following an attack earlier this year. Well worth a visit, support the largely unsupported owner to continue to offer this unique experience.
