Our boy scout troop camped at the primitive site over the weekend. The primitive site is very large and spread out and adjacent to the lake. Everyone had a great time camping at Santee State Park. A few things that Santee could do better in the future: (1) the women's bathroom on site (it's an old bathhouse) was out of order and we reported it and it was fixed except for one bathroom stall. The ranger or maintenance person didn't have the courtesy to let anyone know camping in the primitive area the status of the bathroom. This person worked on the bathroom and then got into his truck and drove away. (2) There were no fishing poles to check out or rent. Any fishing pole had to be purchased at Santee State Park. At other SC state parks, a fishing pole can be rented or checked out. It would be nice if all SC state parks could be consistent and have fishing poles either to be checked out or for rent. (3) Please fix the large potholes in the roads! Thank You.

According to our research this was a must location to stop at. We had a time find it because the sign outside does not state Smith’s at all and it’s at a gas station location. It’s an interesting store with various finds. I’ve never seen so many flavors of fudge. I got half pound of Banana Pudding Fudge and Rocky Road for $7.95, 2 Pralines for $3.79 each and Jumbo Pecans for $10.99. Planning to return. The Fudge is amazingly delicious!

We had a lovely day playing a leisurely round of golf. This is a nice long course with a water hazard starting on the first hole. Friendly staff and very nice pro shop.

Our plans called for a week at the Wyndham Resort in Santee, S.C., so we pulled in to the Visitor Center to find out what was happening in the area at that time. I can't recall the gentleman's name that greeted us but he was very helpful, polite, and knowledgeable in recommending local attractions, including restaurants. We used his brochures when planning our week.

My friend who is a D1 golfer with a full ride got kicked off the course because her college golf uniform that she wears to NCAA events didn’t have sleeves.

Santee, South Carolina is about as small a town as you’ll find. The town sits at exit 98 off of I95 and consists of three stoplights moving east to west. At first glance it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot to the town – several restaurants, gas stations, and motels – all owned by hard-working locals who have made this their life’s work- clutter the real estate off the exit ramp. A little further down is Clarks Inn and Restaurant, owned by the Clark family who pretty much founded the town. However, if you’re a golfer, Santee, SC could easily become your dream destination.

Santee is home to three championship golf courses and some wallet-friendly golf packages at Santee Cooper, Santee National, and Lake Marion. All are located within about 10 minutes of each other. Each course has its own driving range and practice green. Lake Marion’s driving range is lit and it’s not unusual to see players out there after dark working on their game.

With Lake Marion serving as the backdrop, Santee Cooper Country Club has the most scenic views of any golf course in the area. The course was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1967; it’s still in fantastic condition. SCCC sits amid majestic pines and native foliage; the course is well-conditioned and will have you using every club in your bag through a series of beautiful dogleg holes, strategically placed bunkers, and challenging par 3s that require crisply struck tee shots. You’ll find considerable elevation changes considering the area and enjoy several risk-reward opportunities. Santee Cooper Country Club has the most scenic holes in Santee with a panoramic view of Lake Marion.

The first hole on either side at Santee Cooper Golf Club provides a good challenge. Number 1 is a nice risk-reward par 4. From the No. II Tees this dogleg left hole plays 335 yards over water to a well-protected green. A good drive will leave a short pitch shot into an undulated putting surface.

Number 10 is a short dogleg left par 4. Bite off as much of the dogleg as you can off the tee without hitting through the fairway. Pull your tee shot left and you’ll have to deal with some pine trees. A good drive that finds the fairway off the tee will leave a short uphill pitch shot into a well-protected, elevated green.

Lake Marion and Santee Cooper Golf Clubs offer some great package specials. Lake Marion offers several townhomes and villas that are spacious and roomy. All have two bedrooms with 4 double beds and flat-screen TVs in each, 2 bathrooms, a living room, dining area, and fully equipped kitchen. There’s also a hospitality room and a swimming pool. They offer the only “all-inclusive” golf package in the area, which includes daily buffet breakfasts and dinners during the golf season, range balls, and replay rounds. With access to 15 local golf courses, the packaging staff at Lake Marion can put together a package to delight and please every golfer. Local players can join their Golf Advantage Club for $80 which includes a free round of golf, a $25 gift card, and a ton of added benefits.

Lake Marion is also one of the top fishing destinations in the Southeast and has held state records for more than 8 species of fish. Several guides are available and can be found through their website. Golf course and hotel information can be found there as well.

Santee, SC is proof that northerners seeking sunshine and golf don’t have to go as far south as Florida to enjoy great golf opportunities. The weather is more predictable and not as humid, the golf courses are scenic and challenging and the golf packages are a lot more affordable. Between the time you’ll save not driving as far south and the money you’ll save, you can probably stay an extra couple of days.

This seems like a very simple rest area along I-95 heading north but it has a very unique feature. It is one of the many rest areas along the interstate. It is easy pull off with car parking first before the main building and truck parking just beyond it. There are two structures amid the many trees that dot the grounds. Look around and you will be surprised by the curved stone bench and the saying right outside the restroom. It is engraved stone with the saying, “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” Most people just pass by this but I found it a very nice break and one that makes this stop a special one. One of the buildings holds the restrooms with men’s and women’s restrooms on opposite sides of it. There is a second smaller building next in front of the car park that has machines for drinks and food. There are pavilions with open-air covered tables up the hill from the parking lot and restrooms. This was a very nice place to stop and take a break

Anytime driving to/from Florida, we stop in Santee overnight on our way and always stop in here. Heather is the bartender who we've met before and this time we also met Erin. We sat at the bar. Super nice & awesome service.... never an empty glass. Everyone, including the other customers, is friendly and having a good time. Classic bar food with lots of fried items- very reasonable prices . We just got some nachos this time. It's served on a paper plate and not a super huge portion. Cheese was the classic cheap squeezy stuff but the chips were amazing so we really enjoyed them. As described in another review, we did not get a paper receipt. She just told us our total which soundsed resonable and we paid by credit card (yes convenience fee added for that). Live music - not the best singer, but entertaining and people dancing. The atmosphere of this classic local dive bar makes it! If you don't like a dive bar then this isn't your spot, but if you do, then don't miss it!

As a travel agent, I often visit different locations to explore possible new trip ideas for my clients. While traveling in the Santee area, my partner and I called upon "Mouse", with the Santee Cajun Guide Service, and requested a tour of the lake.

She was able to accommodate us, as she took us out for a very informative tour of the lake, explaining the history of the lake and the surrounding area while pointing out wildlife along the way.

As she talked of some of the fishing tours she had done previously, her passion as well as her experience and extensive knowledge of the area became quite evident! It is very obvious that she enjoys making sure that her clients receive exactly what they are looking for, and that she goes out of her way to see that it happens!

Be sure to give them a call if you are in the area and decide that you would enjoy a wonderful fishing trip or lake tour!

We went fishing with the 50hp pontoon fishing boat. It was the first time driving a pontoon boat and it was easy and fun! Donna called us to make sure we still wanted to use the boat because the wind was up this morning. She said we could bring the boat in and she would return our money to the card. I explained to her that we didn't mind. We found a place out of the wind and went fishin'! We called Donna one time with a question, and she answered it and made us feel like family; the way she cared for us.

We caught a Gar! Donna and Eddie were both friendly and helpful! It was a memorable experience, and we will be calling Lake Marion Watersports the next time we vacation at Wyndham - Lake Marion.

For the month of March this course was in great shape. The carts have gps, and the greens were in fine shape. Plenty of challenges. The pro shop is well stocked and the staff very pleasant.
