What travellers are saying
- Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,165 contributionsGros Morne National Park was in the centre of the Rodinia supercontinent (before Pangea). Rocks from the earth's mantle have come to the surface here. This is the also the earth's oldest crust, over 500 million years old.
I went for a guided walk on the Tablelands. The guide's presentation was fascinating.
The orange rocks are Peridonite, igneous rocks that formed in the earth's mantle. The grey rocks are Serpentinite, metamorphic rocks. Pitcher plants are carnivorous. Insects fall into the pitcher-like flowers and can't escape. The Pitcher plant is the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador.Written December 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Throw in a traditional kitchen party song or two and you've got a full experience.Written September 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jack WNepean245 contributionsStunning views and a great free guided tour. While the guided tour is not mandatory, I am glad I did it. Learned a lot about the geology and the plant life. An easy walk for young and old.Written September 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Charlie DLubeck, Germany18 contributionsI was in Groa Morne, with my colleagues. It was an intense 4 days of meetings and wonderful experiences. I could see the Lighthouse from my Oceanview Hotel balcony. I am a hiker, and was determined to walk there. It would have been a possibility. On the last day after our meetings and with little time to spare one of my local colleagues took us out to the location. Unbelievable, stupendous, magnificent. . ... is all that can be said. I will be back and walk to the Lobster Point Lighthouse. This area, the area of Gros Morne is the most beautiful area, that I have ever experienced.Written November 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,165 contributionsThe Gros Morne Theatre Festival is their summer programme. It is a dinner theatre. I had Pan-fried Cod for dinner. The show I saw was was "The S.S. Ethie". This ship ran aground in a storm in 1919. Everyone on board was transferred to shore via a rope chair, including an 18-month-old baby. Legend has it that a Newfoundland dog swam to get the rope and bring it to shore, but that may be a shaggy dog story. It was nice to see a show about the local area. I recommend a visit here.Written November 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- pdotnnddOntario75 contributionsWe are both 50yrs old and in ok shape. All the reviews are correct in saying that this is not easy. But it is achievable. Just be prepared. We each carried 3L of water and had just enough. It was suppose to be sunny all day but in the mountains you never know and it did rain. We took our time and stopped ALOT especially going up the gully which that part alone took us 2 hours to get to the top. The views are incredible and totally worth it. I enjoyed the way down even more but just be prepared that it takes a long time to get back down to the base and then you still have another 4kms. Total time took us older folks 8 hours. Once in a lifetime.Written September 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- blair rMoncton, Canada39 contributionsNice campground. Not very many serviced sites but lots of unserviced sites. Many trees, access to the beach, a good kitchen/bathroom area with a place to charge devices, mirrors in the the individual shower rooms, quiet campground.Written July 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jean-Paul PCharlottetown, Canada6 contributionsThe Marine Station Aquarium is a hidden gem. There is a very reasonably-priced family rate and a free guided tour that goes every 30 minutes (it seems). We took the guided tour and it was EXCELLENT - one of the best museum experiences I've ever had! Our guide was exceptional and treated the kids like VIPs. She answered EVERY question that we asked and made everything very easy to understand. She also fed the wolffish a crab so the kids could watch it eat. Our 30 minute tour probably went 45 minutes and ended at the touch tank where the kids could hold starfish and anemones. Travelling with kids, it was a highlight of our trip to Western Newfoundland!Written July 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - @rosiejetsoffUnited Kingdom37 contributionsBeautiful situation and very welcoming. Lots of information about the geology of the area, some of it highly specialist. The first nation exhibit is spectacular.
Only let down was the cafe which could be so much better.
Recommend the Tablelands Trail after your visit and on to Trout River, the route to there is amazing.
Compared to the Visitor Centre on the other side of the Park which has had a lot of money spent on it and is completely soulless, the Discovery Centre wins hands down.Written September 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lovely sandy beach, warm water (well warm enough to swim), clean facility for outdoor shower, gorgeous view, absolutely perfect. Cost $10 for day pass but well worth it.Written August 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Daniel LKingston6 contributionsThe view on the top is 110% worth the effort! You can see the tablelands on the way. And the Gros Morne Mountain on the top plus a good portion of the Bonne Bay. We went there late afternoon and there were lots of shades, which helps.Written August 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nasir CGuelph, Canada2 contributionsWe were in Gros Morne for 8 days and stayed in Rocky Harbour. We found the hiking and landscapes stunning and would highly recommend visiting for at least 4 days in Grose Morne and if you are a "slow traveler" like us, (and contrary to some other reviews, you certainly could spend a couple of weeks) . Highlights included the different National Park hikes and exploring the area for the first time. Be aware that about half of the restaurants and shops start shutting down in October. This was our first trip to Newfoundland. We came by Port Aux Basques and drove clockwise: 8 days in Gros Morne, 4 days in Bonavista and 10 days in St. Johns - mostly airbnbing it. We weren't sure what to expect in terms of how long we should have stayed in each area, but would not have done it differently, if we had to do it again. Gas is about 20 cents/litre more expensive, food about 20 percent more expensive and booze is about 50 percent more when we compare it to Ontario. Aside from the slight financial differences (remember that it is an island and costs typically increase because of this). Otherwise, we liked it so much that we definitely plan to come back in a couple of years!Written November 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steph SSydney, Australia152 contributionsRecently refurbed path, downhill out and back, 9km return with c.400m elevation gain. Rewarded with beautiful coastal views and rugged green hills (and a few sheep!) Toilet at trailhead and at campsite.Written September 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Miriam SFort Collins, CO63 contributionsIt's a tiny lighthouse - cute, but not impressive. However, the trail going to the lighthouse is very pretty and worth the walk. It's on Cow Head Island, accessible by auto. The beach on the causeway is also interesting for what washes ashore.Written August 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,165 contributionsThe Gros Morne Wildlife Museum features eight large scenes of the animals of the area, such as the Newfoundland Black Bear, the Polar Bear, and the Arctic Fox. It is worth a visit if you are in town.Written December 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
