What travellers are saying
- wetravelalot007Rossville, IN1,297 contributionsWe read the prior review detailing getting to the falls. We took their advice and hiked to the falls. But in actuality you can actually park at the hydro plant and see the falls from there.
For us we parked a mile a way Camp New Wood County Park. We hiked the Grandfather Falls leg of the Ice Age Trail. It was a little under a mile to the hydro plant. The trail along the Wisconsin River is well maintained. It actually walks right through a very nice county park campground that in itself would be a nice quiet place to camp. We spoke to a couple out camping for the weekend and traveled on to the falls. Be sure to bring your bug spray. The mosquitos are thick (we did not).
The hike to the falls was better than the falls themselves. There is some nice large boulders that the water flows trough and there is a grade change of the river but not your typical water fall.
Out trip back to our car was less adventurous. Instead of repeating the mosquito laden trail we hiked back on the road to the park. Overall our hike was around 2 miles and took us an hour. But as we indicated it can be done with far less effort by parking at the hydro plant.Written June 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JymmHChampaign, IL44 contributionsNice campsites settled into deep woods. I wouldn't mind if they had been just a bit further apart, but that's minor. They have flushing toilets and warm showers that are cleaned every day. The campsites were nearly all full, but it still didn't feel crowded. There are several nice trails, short and easygoing. They have a small beach on the lake with a swimming area which made for a nice cooldown at the end of the day. Not much in the way of civilization nor amazing outdoor activities in the immediate vicinity, but if you're OK driving it makes for a nice base camp. I bought firewood on site and I think it would have survived napalm without lighting. I had to get drier, seasoned wood in town, but YMMV.Written June 28, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - sulyn64Stevens Point, WI231 contributionsWe visit Helene's every year and always have a great time. They have so many delicious baked apple goods available. We always enjoy a piece of their apple pie when we visit. Our favorite apple is Honey Crisp but they have other varieties as well. You can pick your own apples or buy some already picked. They also have things for children to do so it is definitely fun for the whole family.Written September 20, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - spolebitskiMilwaukee, WI49 contributionsThe River Bend Trail offers a great recreational experience. It has a paved trail with some side trails along the way. It follows mostly along the Wisconsin River and has historical information along the way. Along the trail you will find benches, bike stations, a sharing library and many more unique items. The Agra Pavilion is a new addition in 2019 that is available for community use. The River Bend Trail has been a great addition to the Merrill community.Written November 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LaCrosseIndiansWoodruff, WI1,297 contributionsWelcome to a sweet Wisconsin taste of genuine, organic practice, Maple products crafted in the rich traditions of family and the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Enjoy a brief tour and history of Anthony's and Rebecca's farm dating back to the 1950's. 60 years later, the 4th generation Maple syrup makers have blended state of the art technology, Wisconsin family values, with the traditions and passion of hard work and determination to create this delicious Wisconsin Maple Syrup. 5000 maple trees, 80000 feet of tubing, 140 of buried sap line (under Hwy P) feeding two jumbo tanks that have over 9000 gallon capacity, filtered via reverse osmosis before heading to the Vermont made evaporator - "the sap and syrup is never touched during the entire process", exclaimed Rebecca The family has chosen to embrace tradition and continue to use wood as a fuel source making pure wood-fired maple syrup a staple.
Their sugarhouse is often a gathering place for family and friends. Make plans to join them for tours of our 100 year old maple forest and state-of the art USDA and FDA inspected sugarhouse, we did and really enjoyed the experience - and oh yes, the maple syrup is deliciousWritten March 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We stopped by, not knowing what to expect, close to 4:30. This was a self-guided tour for my family as we just pulled up to the visitor area and helped ourselves in and picked up an informative brochure of the operating procedure. We were fascinated! I've never seen so many cows lined up for milking. We stayed long enough to actually get acclimated to the smell! Yes, it is definitely a smelly place, but so educational. You do need to climb a spiral staircase to reach the observation catwalk. This farm is huge!Written January 6, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
