Rented a City bike and rode out to Bedford and back on the Minuteman trail. The staff were efficient and made sure the bike was the right size with the seat at the right height height. Bike was evidently well maintained and comfortable for the 5 hours of riding. If you rent and explore the city on your own (as opposed to the guided tour), Boston and surroundings are bicycle-friendly (with bike paths and lanes) -- surprisingly so, given the city's traffic and crazy drivers. Publicly available "blue bike" rentals are available throughout the city, but the bicycle condition is a gamble. I definitely recommend Urban Adventours if you want a reliable bike that is right for you..

This was one of the single-most awesome things I've done solo recently. I live really close and am just kicking myself I've not taken advantage of this gem before.
All of guys from the kiosk to the deck were super friendly; explained to my "new-bie"-self the rules/safety/guidelines of river etiquette and proper kayak procedures. The views are great: Harvard, BU, if you go down river far enough, the Boston Skyline. Peaceful. It's like a river couch you steer at your own pace ("at your own pace" is the key, you can slowly cruise or "go for the gold" - it's YOUR time!).
***If I were visiting I would HIGHLY recommend packing a pair of bike shorts and the like to spend a morning or early afternoon seeing the sites via kayak! It's totally walkable from Harvard Square and parking is available as well.
***Definitely something to do apart from the typical tourist stuff AND, it's not a time suck either!
    Do it!!

First Blue Bike rental - Excellent
But you should change the name of this attraction to Blue Bikes, instead of Hubway Rental. Good ride along the Charles River paths

First of all, I don't want to bash Boston Harbor Boat Rentals - my experience was a good one, but I'm VERY easy going and didn't want to ruin the day with my kids.

    PRO's:
The pricing is great, and it is a WONDERFUL way to see the city and the small islands that lie outside of the harbor. I'm an experienced boater, and this was DEFINITELY a plus for me. The harbor can be a bit crowded, and knowing how to operate a boat and navigate the channels was pretty important. We packed a cooler and had lunch out on the water - really a nice way to see the city.

Although it was difficult connecting with Don, he DID respond to me via text, and was pretty good at following up. Steve, who works with Don, was friendly and punctual, and I had no issues with this.

    CON's:
My chief complaint was in relation to the specific boat. I had asked Don for at LEAST a 20 foot boat, but preferred a 25 foot boat. He told me that this would not be a problem, and booked the trip with me. When Steve showed up, he was punctual and nice, and told me that our 17 foot boat should be arriving shortly.

As an experienced boater, this caught me off guard, and is NOT what we had agreed upon. The boat itself was average, and the equipment was dated and not well maintained.

Probably the most shocking of all was the lack of instruction and direction. Thank goodness I'm experienced, but for those who are NOT, please think twice about it, or at least educate yourself before you go out. Their instruction was just not adequate, which could make for a disastrous experience for someone who has not done this before.

    SUMMARY:
I would DEFINITELY recommend the experience, but check other boat rental places FIRST, check their ratings, and then make a decision. I don't think I would rent from them again, but if I did, I would get CONFIRMATION that they were going to deliver on the boat we had agreed upon.
