You don't have to be Irish to enjoy trippin' around Boston, but in the days surrounding March 17, New England's largest city rolls out the bright green welcome mat to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

We joined half a million visitors by flying in to Logan International Airport. The entry fee for this festivity, is gulping down brogues as thick as Guinness can be had in every pub, accompanied by the sounds of fiddles and penny whistles in the streets which boast a lot of tipsy revellers who crawl from one bar to the next.

The Irish Porter flows freely, and there is nothing odd about seeing someone tip back a pint of lager coloured green in honour of the holiday. Irish themes rule, of-course..... Celtic dance troupes, Chiftains and Ronan Tynan add their heavy credentials to the artists performing on the crowded streets.

Everything culminates on the Sunday closest to the holiday when South Boston hosts one of the world's largest St. Patrick's Day parades, while revellers in their hundreds of thousands descend upon this working-class neighbourhood to celebrate all things Gaelic.
We donned a " kiss me I'm Irish buttons and headed out on the town. I have got to tell you, that anyone looking for a quiet, relaxed time, exploring Boston is 'dreaming'. The bars surrounding Faneuil Hall are jammed, so we ducked into the Purple Shamrock and then, The Black Rose, for a pint or two.

Our day started with a leisurely walk along the Irish Heritage Trail, five km of self-guided tour of 16 different sites of Irish cultural, historical and political significance. We capped our night in Somerville with some authentic Irish fare and free music at the Burren Pub.

Rising early, we headed to South Boston to stake- out a spot along the parade route. We bought some green carnations to hand out to our favourite parade participants and after the crowds had dispersed, we had a relaxing pint at Amphein's, a cosy hangout with the oldest hand carved bar in the USA. Ended our personal revelry downtown at Jose Mcintyre's, the only Irish-Mexican cantina where you can have a margarita with your fish & chips. Great place Boston. Tread wearily... it snows frequently.

A great way to get up your step count up and see some fascinating sites.
My favourite was definitely the State House.
We only got lost a few times on the trail but soon found our way.

I've seen Millennium Park hundreds of times from the Commuter Rail but finally went there on purpose yesterday, a beautiful early spring day. We walked 3-4 miles of the paved and woodland trails and had a great time. Much of the trails parallel Saw Mill Brook or approach the Charles River, and the views from the top of the hill, where most of the plentiful parking is, are spectacular.

Hard to believe this was a landfill 30 years ago!

Plenty of sports fields, lots of room to spread out.
