Awesome park! Always something different to see. If you want to see the whole park plan 3 hours + to drive around the 3 scenic drives. Longer if you want to stop and explore and hike. You can see Visitor center (1 hour) and Bison center (30 minute) for more explanation about the Park. Enjoy ! Here’s a photo of Bison center from yesterday morning-surrounded by bison.

The Wildlife Loop Road is the only place in South Dakota where we saw buffalo, and we saw plenty of buffalo, some very close to the road. We also saw plenty of prairie dogs. There are signs stating not to feed the wildlife, but when we came upon a group of wild donkeys, two nearly stuck their heads in my car looking for handouts. The drive was long, and we were beginning to despair of seeing any wildlife, but then suddenly, there they were. There is a $20 entrance fee to the road.

I hiked with the dog around the lake! It was a week day, but there were many hikers as well as a couple busloads of kids from Colorado. Sylvan Lake and the trails near it are what you make them: the hike can be less than an hour just walking around the lake, or you can spend a whole day climbing and exploring!

Stunning views! It felt like we traveled back in time with old tunnels, curving roads, low hanging trees, and the perfect frame from Mt Rushmore it looked like something bout of a history book. Absolutely breathtaking. Drive North to South of course.

We went in February and our group of 11 had the whole scenic tour to ourselves. Our tour guide was wonderful and full of fascinating information about the cave. We did the tour with a 5, 6 and 8 year old. It was interesting enough that it held their attention for the full 1hr 20 min tour. Make sure if you have little kids you do the Junior Ranger program. We also took time to watch the video in the visitor Verne center and all 3 boys earned a Junior Ranger Badge AND Patch.

Our family of five (6-54 yo) really enjoyed this hike. A steady climb leads to a flatter area surrounded by the spires. It was truly beautiful and the 6 year old had no trouble and didn’t complain. At the end of the hike we met two mountain goats- a mom and her baby - and enjoyed watching them for a while before heading back down.

The rangers at the visitor center directed us to this hike since it is dog friendly. The terrain is relatively easy, some very minor rock scrambling and one muddy patch from the recent rain, but otherwise normal hiking. There are several great photo ops both along the trail path and at the dock near the lodge, where you can capture the reflections of the rock in the water. A great hike.

We hiked this trail in August. It was a warm day but we started in the morning. It takes about 3 hours and the hike is best done counterclockwise as there are steep parts to the trail. It is easier to do the steep section early and use the handrails. There are small waterfalls at the bottom of the gulch and lots of beautiful vistas throughout the hike.

This is one of the more compelling scenic drives in the country.
Encompassing the Needles Highway and the Iron Mountain Road, this figure 8 loop provides an amazing variety of landscape and geological features. From grand mountain spires to serene bodies of water, from carved stone tunnels to a multitude of wildlife viewing opportunities, and from both natural & man-made granite sculpture to magnificent panoramic vistas; this is a not-to-be-missed experience.
Being early May, the traffic flow was rather minimal; so we were able to proceed at a leisurely pace, pull over often for photos and/or viewing, and not impede others.
If one has the opportunity, traveling this byway is a joy.

Drove van around, parked, and opened up doors to go through photos and read. Wind blowing through cattails, view of mountains in distance, birds chirping…so relaxing and quiet…and just off the road. Ahhh.
