All my kids 11, 14 and 16 and went from beginner to advanced in 4 days... all my kids were skiing black runs in a week.
A life skill they have for the rest of their lives.

Good skiing for advanced skiers and for beginners as well, wide and well groomed pistes (mostly red and blue), a lot of fun on ski, not too busy, beautiful scenery.

We visited Liechtensteinklamm (gorge) August 2023, but went on a Thursday since we knew weekends would always be more crowded.

It's near the town of St. Johann and is said to be one of the deepest and longest in Austria. We tried to heed the common advice of avoiding crowds at popular attractions by going before 11 or after 3, and we arrived around 10:30am. There was already a line of about 25 people and, for crowd-management, they only let a certain number of people in at the same time. While one of us waited in line, the other bought tickets.

The gorge is named after the Prince of Liechtenstein, who kindly footed the bill in 1875 to have it made accessible to the public.

The first part of the walk looks down on the river with several tunnels and galleries blasted into the walls. Then you descend right down to the river. The original way down was damaged by landslides in 2017 and in 2020 a remarkable spiral staircase was built in its place. 3 new tunnels were also added. A tourist brochure comforts visitors by saying that loose rocks are cleared away several times a year, and earth movements are carefully monitored.

Once down the spiral staircase you are walking in galleries right above the water, which was cloudy and tumultuous on our visit, possibly due to recent rain. You can also see the striking veins of the rocks (white limestone and black shale). We had sunshine that day and at one point where the walls widened we had a nice rainbow. Noon, with the sun directly overhead, provides the best light. Other times the walls almost touched and the tunnels were quite dark. This was the one gorge walk where we wished we had brought a flashlight.

Liechtensteinklamm is about 980’ deep (300m) and it takes 440 steps to get down to the river. Although the gorge is 4km long, you can only explore 1.5 km of it, so it’s not a long walk. The brochure recommends allowing 1.5 hours total. At the end, the gorge opens up and there is a viewing platform of a tall waterfall. You return the same route.

When we got back up to the entrance (around noon) we were shocked at how long the line was to get in! Easily 100 people. St. Johann is not especially close to any major city, so we blamed the crowd on the many tour buses that had arrived. Of course, tour buses are the main reason it’s always suggested to avoid 11am-3pm. But, rather than inconvenience visitors who went out of their way to be there, we wish they’d cut down on the number of buses they allow instead, many of which brought visitors who didn’t even know why they were there (based on comments overheard). But, of course, money talks.

It is the best creative idea to make the top of the mountain a paradise for children, with a lot of playground, little attractions, and different stations what they combine with a sticker set. If the children put the stickers in the right position, they get a small presents at the cashiers at the entrance of the summer lifts when you are back. It is definitely a one day program. And you have the amazing view everywhere there. Brilliant and a must have.
Do not forget to use sun protection on sunny days..

We would highly recommend the SnowShop (Toni Gruber) in Alpendorf. Gerhard and the team there were extremely professional, helpful and friendly. They fitted out 9 of us with everything we needed and the whole service was super smooth and easy. Thank you Gerhard! Kylie

Only my 2nd time up the mountains and as I'm not the most confident of skiers, lessons were needed.
The group has 6 or so students in on the first day, but this down to 2-3 on the rest of the days, which made it much better for learning. Herbert was a great instructor and by the end I was able to make it over to the Krapfenalm to sample the delicious donuts.

This is probably the best Hutte on the Alpendorf side of the mountain. We just keep going back. Great local food and more reasonably priced than some. The old fella behind the cash till has a great memory and welcomes us warmly everytime we go and is always laughing and smiling.

My 15 year old son and his two friends did the white water rafting. They all voted it the best part of the holiday. Picked up from our hotel and brought back. You can buy a CD for 25 euros with photos of the action!
