- Akkers1London, UK1,073 contributionsWe decided to have a day trip whist we were here and went to La Gomera which was a place that we had never been to before.
We were picked up and taken to the ferry terminal where we caught the ferry across to La Gomera which takes about an hour. We had the same coach driver, Massimo, and Samuel who was our tour guide throughout the trip.
It was quite a whistle stop tour, but was very interesting seeing things like the Hermigua Valley, Garajonay National Park, the Laguna Grande, the Roque de Agando to name but a few places.
Lunch was provided at a restaurant in Agulo, which was nice and rustic. Here we also had a live demonstration of Gomeran whistling which was really interesting.
The last part of the tour was a quick walk through the capital San Sebastián before getting back on the ferry.
Rather than be dropped off back at our pickup spot we decided to walk back from the ferry terminal as it was quicker than going round all the other drop off points before ours.

There were 5 of us, 2 from London who spoke a little Spanish and a family of 3 from Madrid who spoke some English. The tour itself was brilliant. Basil, our guide, took us all around the island, telling us lots about the island, life on the island, and the geology of the area. His knowledge is extensive, and he went out of his way to talk and answer any question, switching between Spanish and English in the same breath. My friend and i really enjoyed ourselves and made some friends along the way. Unfortunately failed to pick us up at the arranged meeting place. I was staying in Hermigua and was fascinated with the banana plantations in the area. It was my desire to hear a bit more about the local history and agriculture. This Ethnographic Park provided exactly that!
The self-guided, audio tour around the plantation is a top quality production. The walkways are well manicured and an easy walk in sandals. It is a bit of a hilly terrain, although the walks are solid (wood or cement) so it probably is not the most accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. There are three small museum expeditions which are well done and full of history.
We bought the VIP delux ticket that includes a tasting pairing after the tour. It was fun to try a sampling of local cheeses, spreads, bread, and wine. After the tour we stayed and ate at the restaurant which uses produce from the garden. The food was a foodie's delight. The gift shop sells local products with which I plan to return and pack in my suitcase! I went on the La Gomera tour with them, although the tour was outsourced to a different company. The tour itself was great. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the driver was also very friendly. We had enough time to visit places, take photos, and enjoy some leisure time.
We had some hickups regarding the pickup location. But luckily the guide was able to find me.
