Organized trip from our hotel with a very helpful guide. Very well maintained walkways alongside the river and bridges and steps. Got my daughter to take pictures of the waterfall itself as it is quite a climb up steps in a forested canyon past the hydro plant. Lots of native plants and wildfowl on the river.

As others have said, Google will take you to the wrong place. Type in ‘SALTO BAIGUATE’ and that will take you to the entrance and car park.
    Toilets here if needed.

The walk to the falls is nice. Mostly pathed with fencing most of the way around. But hold on to your bouncy small children as there will a quite a drop in some parts.
The steps down to the falls are steep and deep but there aren’t too many of them. Feels like more on the way up!

The waterfall is lovely. Especially in the sunshine.
There are lots of rocks to climb around at the bottom and you can easily cross to the other side. The water is shallow and you can go right under the water fall if you wish.

Let me begin by getting right to the point. I’ve climbed (hiked) Pico Duarte 3 times. It is NOT EASY. Every time I go I hurt for days after. I’m in exceptional shape and health. I do CrossFit and MMA (10+ years).

If you breathe heavily walking up a flight of stairs, do not hike this mountain. If you’re not in VERY good shape, do NOT attempt this hike.

Many companies lure people in with beautiful photos and writings about the trees and birds and so on. They talk it up as if it is a 5-mile stroll through the woods.

Reality is best. The first 4km of the hike is fairly easy. The next 4-5 is more difficult. After that you enter “Arrepentimiento,” which means REPENT. The tour companies never mention this in their advertising. Why would they? Even the most in shape of us will likely speak to God during this section of the hike. It is extremely difficult and steep. For 3-4+ hours you will endure one of the most extreme hikes of your life.

After Arrepentimiento you will enjoy a more relaxing hike, a natural water well, and then quite a bit of downhill walk until you get to camp.

The hike on day two up to the peak is almost as grueling as Arrepentimiento, just less time. It will take you about 3 hours to the top, and another 2 to come down to camp.

And then on day three you get to hike uphill for 1-1.5 hours before heading downhill for 6-8 hours. Going downhill for so many hours can be extremely intense on your knees, especially when the ground is wet or muddy.

If you’re not in shape I highly suggest using a mule to get to the top and to come down. You can walk and ride. Don’t kill your body or hurt yourself. I’ve seen people who are in great shape need knee surgery after this hike. I’ve seen people have serious falls. People have died of heart failure on this very “hike.”

For those of you who are in shape, go! Give it your all and see how really in shape you are…mentally and physically! If you manage to get to the top and all the way back down without using a mule you are one tough cookie!

As a side note, the views from the route and the top are breathtaking and unimaginable. It’s 1000% worth it, which is probably why I’ve been dumb enough to torture myself more than once. :)

Amazing. Hard. If wet slippery. I hike a lot. This does not take 1-2 hours!! More like 4-5... I think the distance may need to be checked. Felt longer. Insane views.

The La Confluencia is a nice modern 2 story mall in Jarabacoa. There is a playground for the kids, a few restaurants, some businesses, internet company, a furniture shop, insurance, and clean bathrooms. The parking lot is a permeable "green" lot - very nice. Oh and there is a wonderful old tree just across the street that is a landmark.

I traveled there to visit the largest collection of Orchids in Dominican Republic. They certainly have a large collection but most of the Orchids were infected by fungus and/or lice. It was very disappointing. They should close down and treat the plants. It is obvious they are a bulk sale plant shop with little idea on how to cultivate and treat plants.

Paragliding with Hawk Paragliding was the best decision we took here in Jarabacoa! It was a once in a lifetime experience and Luis made it all possible on short notice. We were a little nervous but the views were worth it! Definitely would recommend!!

My husband and I went River rafting here. It was a lot of fun. They gave my husband a different helmet so he could attach his gopro on top. The tour guides made it a lot of fun and ensured everyone understood what needed to be done and when. The lunch afterwards was delicious and everyone there was super nice and friendly. Also they have a pool table, ping pong, and hammocks for you to relax or have some fun.
