- rbaeriTel Aviv, Israel93 contributionsYou can park your car and walk both ways (about 5 hours ) or park in Prionia and walk down to the refuge with a hope to catch a ride back up.Written July 26, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - W SKent, UK52 contributionsWe saw this on TripAdvisor as something to do. We all enjoy swimming and with the gorgeous heat we decided to visit. The drive is lovely (a couple of sharp turns) but sensible driving negates any panic. Once there take a couple of minutes walk down the path to the you waterfall. We went a couple of times. Once we were early and no-one else was there. That was nice. Even when busier it is still nice. The water is fresh as is to be expected. So peaceful though. I would recommend sliders as some of the stones are a bit sharp.Written August 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Genevieve SAvebury, UK3 contributionsWe stopped at Mount Olympus en route from Karditsa to Halkidiki
I hadn’t quite anticipated the long windy cliff edge roads to 1100m altitude where we had lunch at the wonderful Prionia.
My husband is Greek but he had never been so we enjoyed taking our two young children there.
The road trip was scary at times as I hate heights but it was a well maintained road, not busy this time of year and had some stunning views.
The cabin at Prionia had a log fire going, was surprisingly busy for April and served the most amazing authentic Greek bean soup, we were served quickly and despite this being a clearly touristy spot and having a captive market, it was very reasonably priced. It seemed locals from the nearby monastery were also eating there so must be good!
Some cute souvenirs on sale and an amazing wooden bridge over a stream by a waterfall right outside.
Great walks from this spot I believe and public toilets and car park available.
I bet it gets busy here but was fine when we went on a Friday in April.
Fill up your water bottles from the fresh mountain spring.Written April 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is located at the Enipeas ravine at an altitude of 850 m. It was established in 1542 but was destroyed by the Germans in 1943. A new monastery was established at a distance of some 5 km to the northeast of the old one, closer to the town of Litochoro.Written June 14, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Saki52London, UK36 contributionsAlthough officially closed because of covid the curator allowed us to have a private visit. Some interesting local history, wonderful model boats and ships and a collection of what can only be described as maritime bric-a-brac. Utterly charming and quite unexpected to a village in the foothills of Mount Olympus.Written November 1, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Leeder47Duffield, UK460 contributionsThis review is for the Old Monastery of St Dionysius. Be aware the old & new are different and very far apart. The new just outside Litochoro, the old about 25minutes further up Mount Olympus & along many narrow bends. It is a great stop from which to see the highlights of the E4 route, without committing to the full 6 hrs. Nice 20 min walk over a wooden bridge across the river to the chapel in the rock. A 10 min walk in the opposite direction takes you to the beautiful waterfall. People were swimming but there are signs saying it isn’t allowed as it is used as drinking water.
The old monastery was destroyed by the Germans during World War Two but it is now being painstakingly rebuilt. It looks partly like a building site as a result. The 5 stars are therefore for the entire surrounding area rather than the monastery per se.
The New Monastery just outside Litochoro, features in some of these pictures & is also worth a visit.Written September 26, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Roger SLondon, UK63 contributionsWhilst the drive is on a very winding road and the trek to the falls is over boulders and steep in places it is really worth the visitWritten September 24, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - worldtravellerTomPaterswolde, The Netherlands529 contributionsThe route is well marked. You would think with signs, but the donkey dung is a better indicator where the Path is. Of course the donkeys are used to supply food to the refuge, but the amount of flies along the path can be annoying.
The path crosses some rocky slopes, and even a small glacier (so in July we saw some snow!). There are plenty of hikers, so little chance to get into trouble.
The continuous ascent makes it quite challenging, as well as the temperature. Above 2000m it starts becoming bareable. Nonethtless the pleasure when you see the refuge is tremendous. In high season please make a reservation.
When walking with smaller children, the route is possible but will take four hours. So the total route from Litochorno on one day is not really possible.Written August 1, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lee Chu KeongSingapore, Singapore15 contributionsDimitrios is the best taxi service there is in Litochoro! I left my camera in the train station, and he helped me make a phone call to the station master to keep the camera. He suggested great places to visit in Litochoro. We took several taxis in Greece, and Dimitrios was the best by a wide margin. Highly highly recommended. You will not be disappointed.Written January 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
