- Nabil AOrleans, France261 contributionsBeautiful day. Nice lake trip. Nice waterfall calm walking around. Take with you some food because over there we didn’t find a restaurant nor something to eat.Written May 7, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - karen cDoncaster, UK85 contributionsTrying to find this place was not easy, it took us a good 2.5 hours in the car due to a couple of road closures and the roads were long and winding. However it was worth it in the end and we binned the satnav and found a quicker more direct route home.
It's worth setting off early to arrive in time for lunch at the restaurant before you set off on the caleche.
The cost of the trip..caleches, boat and bus is around €18.50 per person, not unreasonable.
The caleche (horse and long cart with seats/covered) ride is in two parts and takes you to a viewing platform where you get a good view of the gorge. A small climb but easily managed by a gentle slope and some steps. The view is breathtaking. The caleche then takes you to the second stop where it leaves you to make your way down the gorge to the boat.
The walk from the second /final drop off point is long and fairly steep in places. You can stay on the road all the way to the bottom. There is a woodland path to the left of the main road, it's not a very good path and is steep and slippy in places . We made the mistake of following others down it, only to meet up with those that had stayed on the road further down. So stay on the road is my advice! However it's all downhill and the return trip is by boat and taxi/bus so if you can manage the downhill slope you're OK.
The lake at the bottom of the gorge is half in France and half in Switzerland. Border control are present but no passports are required if you're on this trip as you have tickets pre-paid which you are given at the restaurant.
There are boats that stay on the French side of the lake and Swiss boats which leave from a jetty reached by a bridge.
Before getting good the boat you walk to the viewing point to see the river and cascade.
At the bottom of the gorge there are restaurants and a few souvenir shops. From here there is a higher viewing point...take this route if you want to see the cascade in full in front of you from high up. We walked to the lower one, takes you to the top of the cascade but you look down on it from the side and the view is not very good.
The boat trip lasts 20 minutes and I would have liked it to have been longer. We noticed that there are places you can get boats that take you on a 2 hour + trip up the lake and where you can also get off and walk to the cascade.
This trip gives you a short ride on the caleche and a fantastic view of the gorge from above for a few minutes but then the rest is a long walk down a road to the gorge through woodland with no view of the lake until you reach the bottom. If you are not taken with the idea of half an hour on the caleche then you might want to look at the other boat only trips which still give you a stop to see the cascade but travel further up the gorge and return to the same embarkation point.
Having said that it was a great day, the peaceful ride through countryside on the caleche was lovely , the meal we had at the restaurant before we set off was very good and all in all it was an enjoyable trip.Written August 7, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The walk leads to a nice ''buvette'' with friendly people.Written June 4, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Odile CNeuchâtel, Switzerland134 contributionsVery enjoyable trip up river through the deep limestone gorge, with ample time at the end for the short walk to the amazing watefall and lunch in one of the nice restaurants there, or a picnic. The trip in October is perhaps the most beautiful for the amazing colours.Written July 28, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
