Museum dedicated to Ötzi, the Iceman discovered in the alps nearby in the early 1990s. Very interesting displays with video interviews from all involved in the discovery as well as the preservation of the mummified body.

Great views on the long ride up. Do the cable car/train combo ticket for 15 euros. Ride the train up top between two villages if you're not into or don't have time to trek. Picturesque area.

We visited Bolzano for the day to see the Christmas market.

The Christmas Market was held in the Piazza Walther the town square.

This is the focal point of Bolzano's old town, and dates to the early 1800s.

Cafes and shops line the area, and the duomo sits on one end.

It was amazing. We had a tour with David that should be 1:30 hrs but it lasted more than 2 hours and a half. He was very informative, friendly and enthusiastic. He wasn’t bothered with our MANY questions (that’s why it took more time, obviously). The place is a bunker built and used by the nazis in WW2. In the meantime, part of it is transformed into an art gallery (I didn’t like this fact in the beginning. However, when I think of it as a transformation resembling new beginnings it becomes interesting). We reached the place by taxi, you can also walk to it as Bolzano is really small, and you can also use the bus then walk less than 100m and you are there. We booked by appointment. So yes you need to arrange the visit. We contacted them by WhatsApp. I would definitely recommend the place. It would be better to visit wearing a trekking shoes.

Beautiful castle, very well maintained and with useful and thorough explanations. The position is impressive. The highlight are the wonderful frescoes, unique example of non religious medieval frescoes. In the castle there is also a nice restaurant.

Wonderful winery with great wines and views from their tasting room overlooking Bolzano. Host was very nice and informative. Pinot Grigio similar to cool climate Australian wines). Easy to get to by bus (165 from Bozen bus station, get off at signato turnoff and walk 200m back down the road). As I was without car I couldn't buy more than 2 bottles. Lovely walk back down to Bolzano on the old road through some lovely wine estates and simply gorgeous countryside. Well worth the effort and time to try some wine types that I haven't come across before (in Australia).
Next time I will hire a car and buy a case or two!

Wonderful castle ruin, which you can explore via an extensive array of metal staircases. Bring good shoes and avoid rainy days.

This church is in the centre of the town. Its roof tiles are very nice. They are black green and yellow. Inside the church is high and sober.

Highly recommend! It is a wonderful experience and provides great understanding of the wine industry of the region. Super interesting to see how the gravity cellar works and taste the delicious wines. Elia was an amazing guide and presented a really instructive and interesting tasting.

The façade of the Dominican church in Bolzano is extremely sober. This contrasts with the church interior. Apart from the rose window and a few narrow pointed arch stained glass windows, the rest is completely flat.
It's a nice three-nave gothic church. The side aisles are narrower than the central nave, but the three have the same height. Behind the high altar the side aisles disappear, that on the right becoming however the chapel of St. Giovanni. The vaults on the three naves are ribbed ones, typical of the gothic style. That behind the high altar was however barroquized. The part of the chancel under that vault is separated from the rest of the church by an arcade. It's something which is not very common in catholic churches.
There are on the walls of that church remnants of frescoes of a great value, which should be carefully contemplated and examined. Likewise, there are several beautiful paintings. Inside the temple is very rather quiet. This, coupled with the mentioned artworks, makes the fact of being in that temple be very pleasant.
At the end of the left side aisle there is the chapel of the merchants, whose altar is of a high artistic value due to its architectural features, the sculptures and the decoration. It's was made of polychrome marble by Mattia Pezzi of Verona in mid seventeenth century. It's typical of the early baroque period. It was embellished with geometric inlays and the alternation of jutting and concave volumes. Two pairs of non aligned plain columns with chorynthian capitals support an outstanding cornice and the curved arched tympanum on which one can see two allegorical figures sculpted in the late seventeenth century by Domenico Tomezzoli. The mural paintings by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri are really stupendous. They refer to the miracle of the Soriano regarding the apparition of the Virgin and of the Saints Magdalene and Catherine of Alexandria to the lay brother Lorenzo da Grotteria of the Domenican convent of Soriano Calabro on the night of September 15th 1530.
The Dominican church in Bolzano is therefore in general a very interesting temple which should be visited though if it's just to admire the artworks it houses and feel the serenity deriving from the atmosphere inside.
