What travellers are saying
- roermoblHampshire, UK97 contributionsAn amazing place! We went twice and saw different things both times, so it's worth repeating if you have time. We saw an incredible variety of fish, nurse sharks, eagle rays, coral, and a loggerhead turtle. The water is incredibly clear and perfect for snorkelling. It was quieter at the weekend.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- roermoblHampshire, UK97 contributionsAn incredible experience! You're in the water with the sharks, rays and fish swimming around you within touching distance (although obviously you shouldn't pet them). It was a real highlight of our holiday, so much so that we went a second time!
I'd recommend going with a small group or on a private tour, and there were fewer boats there at the weekend.
Apparently fishermen used to clean their catch here, then when it became a reserve the tour guides carried on feeding the sharks/rays a few little scraps to encourage them to come over to the boats. I doubt the animals are dependent on these snacks and I did see some of them exhibiting natural scavenging behaviours.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We went twice and saw lots of different fish, turtles, a couple of nurse sharks and rays, a massive lobster, and - of course - lots of coral. Smaller and quieter than Hol Chan.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mindy BCosta Brava, Spain99 contributionsLots to do for all ages. Water sports, massages, bars, music. My son enjoyed the afternoon. The drive out there was a bit much, but overall a great afternoon of fun.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChristyFitchburg, WI6 contributionsVery lovely pieces by local artists! Fairly priced, staff was not welcoming nor helpful. Shop was over crowded with pieces. A staple if visiting San Pedro Town.Written November 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Escape402459Los Angeles, CA2 contributionsGreat ambiance, visual representations of Garifuna culture at this quaint restaurant. This is the real deal, the food is delicious and the service was great. We enjoyed the Garifuna drumming , returned later that week with friends. Support a Belizean owned restaurant and enjoy a yummy meal at Black and White.Written March 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Empty NesterBoston, MA133 contributionsThere are not many recent reviews on Bacalar Chico so I was a little nervous about the trip. It is a pretty remote place so I think most people pass for closer snorkeling and dive sites. I was attracted to the opportunity to be someplace different and off the beaten path. And this is it, we did not run into anyone else in the reserve. There are no scheduled tours so a custom trip is the only way to go. We set up ours through Richard Gillette at Suya Tours. He hooked us up with Alan, our captain and Bryan his mate. The trip was totally unique. A one-hour boat ride from our South of San Pedro location brought us to a desolate reef area just South of the Mexican border. We fished for an hour in several locations and caught numerous varieties of snapper. Then we went to our first snorkel location where we hunted lobster and Conch. We caught some of both as well as seeing many tropical fish, lobster, barracuda, rays and a green moray eel among the reef. While we snorkeled a second location, Alan and Bryan made a wonderful Conch Ceviche for the next leg of our trip. We then entered the mangrove canal dug by the Mayans 1500 years ago. Supposedly, there are manatees in this area, but we did not see any. There are also seasonal turtles in the Summer. We stopped at the Bacalar Chico Ranger Station where Alan gave an interpretive summary of the history of the area while Bryan cooked up our Snapper and Lobsters for lunch. The ride back was about 45 minutes using the bay side so we got to tour the entire circumference of Ambergris Caye. It is a long day — started at 8 am and arrived back at our Villa at 5 pm— but well worth it and definitely a highlight. By the way, the guide books talk about an 11 mile trail system on the reserve but we did not see anything about them so I am not sure they still exist. Our guides have not taken anyone on the trails and there was no information at the ranger station.Written December 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LaceyAlynSandpoint, ID50 contributionsWe took two 3 hour snorkeling trips. One was to Hol Chan and Shark Alley and the other to Mexico Rocks and Ray Alley. Both had very friendly, funny and knowledgeable crew members. Love the smaller boat and the more intimate experience. Loved how they point stuff out while you are snorkeling. Would definitely book with them again. My husband and kids 7&14 also had a great time.Written February 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sandra H10 contributionsThe gentleman working in the Cultural Center was a wealth of knowledge about the island of Ambergris Caye and the Mayan people. This is a very worthwhile visit if you are interested in history of the Mayan people. There aren’t many, but some very interesting artifacts found on the island.Written February 25, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChristyFitchburg, WI6 contributionsMY FAVORITE PLACE TO BUY ART IN SAN PEDRO TOWN!!!! Has a nice upscale gallery feel but showcases Belizean artists. I was pleasantly surprised by the fair pricing. So be aware, they only ship paintings. I had to make a morning of getting two boxes of masks and wooden art mailed at the local post office. The gallery was beautiful! The staff was friendly and helpful. Do yourself a favor and check it out!Written November 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
