- Kanyakumari_11Madrid, Spain13 contributionsI loved the Mational Museum of Beirut. It helps you so much to understand the rich history of Phoenia. The wonderful sarcophagus of Ahiram, of Achilles, the Ford collection of sarcophagi; the Abduction of Europa mosaic, Tyre hypogeum, bull protome, Eshmun Tribune are a few of many interesting objects of this museum. I visited the museum before going to the different cities and archeological sites. Personally I would have visited the museum after to look at the exhibits with more knowledge.Written October 21, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Adam JonesBeijing, China58 contributionsVery nice mosque - the most impressive I have seen in Lebanon. You may enter the mosque between 8:30 - 11:00 most days. The interior design is also beautiful with large chandeliers and mosaics.Written December 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VinnieLondonDoha, Qatar11,805 contributionsThe cathedral at time of visit was in the restricted downtown zone but as a tourist you could access. - neeratravelerSan Francisco, CA215 contributionsPigeon rocks are two very interesting natural rock formations. They are also known as Rock of Raouche. Raouche is an upscale area. It is nice to walk along the corniche and view them. I went there late afternoon but I believe that best time to view them is during sunset.Written June 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Peter SlabbaertBornem, Belgium1,201 contributionsThe Beirut Corniche is probably one of most beautiful promenades if you want to make a long and relaxing walk. Starting at the Zaytunay Bay this promenade stretches out for several km's with some nice view points such as the pigeon rocks. Even during the cooler winter-month of december people love to stroll along this open area. We were lucky with the weather so for us it felt more or less like spring. Most enjoyable to watch the fishermen at the shore. Even when the evening falls there are still lots of people gathering together. There are a lot of new buildings but now and then you can find some older buildings in between which gives the environment a typical feeling.Written December 31, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There were many great shops for buying tourist gifts and everything was reasonably priced. Also, places to snack are around.Written September 13, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Semaan D. MakaryEhden, Lebanon542 contributionsIn 1912, the wealthy & prominent Lebanese aristocrat Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock built the private villa that now houses the museum. He decreed in his will that the villa be transformed into a museum. When he died in 1952, he bequeathed the villa to the city of Beirut. The museum opened in 1961, directed by Amine Beyhum, with an exhibit of works of contemporary Lebanese artists, setting a precedent for cultural events in Beirut.
The Sursock Museum building exemplifies Lebanese architecture, with its Italianate (specifically Venetian) and Ottoman architectural influences. It is one of the few remaining villas from its epoch in Beirut. It is located in the historic Rue Sursock in the Rmeil district of Beirut. The street is home to other mansions that were built in the 19th century by Beirut's most prominent families, such as the Sursocks and the Bustroses, even though this architectural heritage is threatened by developers and an almost-unregulated real estate market.
On August 4, 2020, the museum sustained significant damage and some of its artworks were destroyed as a result of an ammonium nitrate explosion.
The museum was restored thanks to the financial commitment of the Italian government, which allocated one million euro in May 2021. #beirut #lebanon #summer #vacationWritten August 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
