Worth the drive to the end of the island, great views, plentiful parking, small fee to climb the lighthouse.
If you have small children or adults who wish to be children north beach access gives rock pools and interesting rock strata. There are cafes, shops but a lovely picnic site should you wish.
Sadly the madding crowds are there in abundance.

This is a quirky little zoo that is completely guided in French. However they do provide a sheet in English. You can feed the coypu by hand and the rat show is very entertaining only lasts a couple of hours.

Amazing place, good for a degustation ( not expensive at all ) and a walk on the farm. Beware dogs are not welcome! Just next door there is also an oyster shop...

Wonderful bird park on the Ile de Oléron. Although signs are in French they provide a laminated card in English providing details of the birds to look for. The turtles were a bit hit with my son. The observation tower is worth the climb. Well worth the 10 euros it cost for both of us.

This is a nice place allowing to learn a little about salt processing in the area (not much though, I guess a tour would be needed to have complete picture). Anyway a nice short stroll under the sun and options to have a drink.

I could have been in the Caribbean! beautiful sand and crystal clear water! And as the beach is protected, you can actually swim as no big waves.

What a find! La Boirie is charming with lots of winding paths taking you to different areas of the garden. Slightly tropical in feel, there are towering bamboos, banana plants, lots of succulents and a fine collection of salvias. A true plantsman’s garden - vaut la visite.

We came to Oleron not fully aware of it's military history. This fort was really fascinating. Great walking around, nice views out over the water. And free too! Just walking around we really got a sense of the history of the place. Fascinating really.

You can certainly feel the Belgian heritage in these ale's, if you closed your eyes you could be in the main square in Brugge, apart from it being a lot warmer and not raining on Olèron, great beers all..
I bought them in La cotinierre on a Sunday in a tourist type shop, saved my night .. highly recommend..
