The best part of the Monte Verde excursion is walking there. The trip there is like a geography and history lesson. There are only rusty antennas on top of the mountain itself, which have been rendered unnecessary by fiber optics. Remember to bring water bottles and your own snacks. There is no shade and a small teahouse is the only place where you can get something in your mouth. The best and most difficult route is to take a minibus to the fork in the Monte Verde road and from there walk up to the old path. If you can find a map where the path is marked! An easier option is to walk up the paved narrow road without a map.

On our first day in Mindelo we took a taxi past the airport to the Foya Branca Resort. From there we started walking on a beautiful path in the cliffs above the sea towards the lighthouse of Ponta do Farol. After about 30 minutes - with the lighthouse not being far away anymore - we had to return due to a rock slip which had blocked the already narrow path (people with vertigo might stay away from the start).

On our way back we could watch for quite some time a giant manta ray swimming on the surface of the sea. Next I felt like going for a swim. There were some waves, but not of the size, which would have inhibited me of going into the water. This was a mistake I was to regret later. I had been swimming for quite a while not too far from land, when suddenly a much bigger wave than all the previous ones built itself up next to me and tossed me around as if in a power washing machine.

First I thought that my back was broken and was worried that I could not move my legs anymore, but luckily I just felt pain and managed to reach the shore, where my wife was waiting, who had been smart enough not to test the waves. With much difficulty I managed to walk on the sand towards the village of Sao Pedro, where we had given appointment with our taxi driver.

For 3 night visitors to Mindelo like us, the “full monte'' of sights begins at the Belem Tower (morning fish market, Praça Estrela with tiled scenes & the statue of Diogo Alfonso) and ends at this beautiful white sand beach. They are connected by the very walkable 1 mile long promenade that passes the pleasure port, ferry port, container port and the MOAVE grain elevator/flour mill.
At this beach, note the restricted turtle egg zone near the Kalimba Beach Club where there are E3 palapa beds, food and restrooms. Here, one can while away a few restful hours to contemplate the Djeu Islet with its prominent white 1888 Dom Luis lighthouse and distant Santo Antão Island.

Visited this island in Cap Verde enroute to a transatlantic crossing. Saw the fish market and then slowly climbed out of town to a lookout spot at the highest point. See photos. The drive up to the top is dramatic but worth the trip. Not lots to see other than these views.

A museum of the sea; with many old pictures of how the port looked , when it was an important coaling station for shipping. The history of the visiting whaling ships needing local people to work upon them.
Don't miss the fine views of the harbour and town, from the top of the building.

this is the famous Cesaria Evora museum , the house where the greatest singer lived while alive. We were even able to talk to her living brother.

If you stay in Mindelo and you feel like spending a few hours on the beach, this is the place to go. Mind you, this is not a palm tree lined beach paradise ... However this artificial beach has nice white sand and the color of the sea is spectacularly turquoise. Also, the beach is very wide so that you don't hear or see the traffic on the nearby road. Two big pluses about this beach: this is where the locals go, so if you are all about cultural immersion this is where you see the guys play beach ball and the families hang out with the kids. The other very big plus is that there is an amazing beach bar called Caravella situated at the end of the beach. It is popular with tourists and locals, and very popular especially on the weekends (there is a disco in the basement). The bar has a good selection of simple dishes and amazing Caipirinhas for 2$ a pop. One word of caution: CV is known to be windy and sometimes sitting on the beach can become somewhat uncomfortable when the wind picks up and the sand starts hitting you.

A perfectly shaped, small volcano in an almost lunar landscape. You will need Pitt Reitmaier's map (or a local guide) and a 4x4 vehicle. Even part of the track on the map is barely recognizable on the ground, on the west side of the crater. From the Calhau-Mindelo road, take the track on the east side of the crater. Park on the highest point before descending to the coast. Attack the crater straight on, paths are not too clear.

Included in an island tour this cemetery, on the edge of Mindelo, contains the grave of the famous singer, Cesaria Evora. Other than that - it's a large tidy cemetery . . .
