What travellers are saying
- ChrisPennoLiverpool, UK196 contributionsIf you enjoy a walk and brilliant views well worth it. Follow the signs passing all the hotels on the edge of the caldera. Loads of stepsthough.Written March 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsThis is one of the largest and most picturesque churches along the Fira-Oia walking trail. It is built on the hillside above the small town of Imerovigli and if you are walking between Fira and Oia, you can’t miss it.
What you see here is a large, traditional, white-washed church with a bright blue, distinctively studded dome and an imposing bell tower.
Apparently there is a balcony with panoramic views but we couldn’t see how to get to it. The church looked closed when we were there and we couldn’t see any way to get inside or around to the balcony area.
In terms of the Fira-Oia walking trail, the church is much closer to the Fira end, near Skaros Rock.Written September 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Very kind and attentive - explained the session I had booked (I thought it was a massage, it was a treatment) and was able to switch things around when I changed my mind. It was the best massage of my life!! I have chronic hip pain and since my massage it has completely gone away.Written October 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsSt John the Beheaded is one of several churches on the Fira-Oia Walking Trail.
A small, white-washed church, it sits on a lonely, isolated position on Skaros Rock.
To reach it, you have to leave the main Fira-Oia walking trail and take the steep path down to Skaros Rock. It’s a very steep walk downhill to the little church but the path is stepped and there’s a handrail in parts. I didn't find it slippery or dangerous.
The church wasn’t open when we were there (I suspect that it's mostly closed) but it has a small, paved terrace with a lovely view so it’s a nice spot to pause briefly before continuing on to explore Skaros Rock.
It is worth noting that the Skaros Rock diversion adds another hour onto the Fira-Oia walking trail (it’s surprisingly further than it looks).Written September 21, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If like us, you start at Fira, then you’ll pass right by the church, just after leaving the small town of Imerovigli.
It is located on the top of a hill so it has a great view and on a hot day, it’s a timely spot to have a break and catch your breath.
The church was closed when we were there (I suspect that’s it’s mostly closed). However it has a simple cobbled courtyard area with some shade and seating. This is where most walkers were stopping for a short rest and a long swig of the water bottle.
The church itself is quite humble. What you see here is a traditional white-washed church with a small bell tower and a characteristic dome.
It’s a relatively modern church. It was built to replace an older 18th century church that was also dedicated to St Mark.Written September 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If like us, you start at the Fira end, then it is only a kilometre or so into the walk.
This is only a quick stop but it is worth walking out to the large viewing area beside the monastery for a view of the entire Santorini caldera.
From the outside, there is not a lot to see of the monastery itself. Apparently it houses a collection of Byzantine icons but it was closed when we were there.
For the more serious minded, it has an interesting history as one of the first women's monastery in Santorini and dates back to 1651.
It wasn’t always in this location. Originally, it started as a private chapel within the grounds of the Venetian castle of Skaros (we passed Skaros Rock later in the walk).
The chapel belonged to the Gyzi family, who had a bunch of daughters and decided to convert their small chapel into a monastery. The Gyzi girls became the first nuns.
Some 150 years later, the Archbishop of Santorini gave permission to move the convent to its current location, which had the advantage of being much more accessible.
With 32 cells, the new monastery housed a large number of nuns. They lived a quiet life, continuing to weave cotton fabric in the traditional manner. When other monasteries were forced to close due to dwindling numbers, this one had enough nuns to stay open..
It is dedicated to St Nicholas, patron saint of Greece and protector of sailors and seamen. A small, golden mosaic of the saint glitters above one of the main doors.Written September 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
