Muri Beachcomber Questions & Answers

Grand Bend, Canada

I'm looking to go to Muri Beachcomber in Jan/Feb of 2017. I'm an older chap traveling from Canada and will be on my own. Would like some information on how close the restaurants and shops are and cost of small car rental. Any information would be welcome. Thanks Bob Erskine

Hi Bob, in regards to shops, Muri has a chemist, doctor, Post Office, gift shop, 2 small grocery stores that sell alcohol as well, ice cream shop, Fish & Chip shop & 2 cafe/bakeries. You have to travel to Avaru for bigger supermarkets, butchery, liquor stores etc. About 15 mins. by road

Muri beachcomber is right next to two cafes, one a yummy French bakery. There's also a pharmacy and general store within walking distance. There's a post office with wifi within walking distance too and three times a week there's a food market where lots of people buy their meals and eat outside. That's right next to Muri. Beachcomber . Be aware that jan/ feb is cyclone season so it'll. e very hot with possible storms. Car hire is about $30-40 NZ a day but there's only one road around the island and buses are cheap and the drivers are often quite entertaining. There's also a big market every Saturday in Avaroa so it pays to arrive Friday and stock up Saturday. There are good supermarkets now. Hope this helps

Hi Bob

There's a GREAT burger place right outside Miri beachcomber. You also have a bus stop right at the door step. Raro has 2 buses that run half hour to an hour apart, one going clockwise and the other anti-clockwise around the 32km island. If you're staying awhile, worth while to get a 10 ride pass for $30. Also Miri beachcomber have kayaks and bikes you can use free of cost. There may be a bike hire charge although when we were there we got it for free. There's the cultural village Te Vara Nui 5 min walk from the place to the left. And on the right 10min walk you have a great Mexican place I recommend you try. There's a Thai place as well owned by the same pekoe but it wasn't my fave at all. There's a convenient store 5 min to the right. It's a very handy spot. I wouldn't stay elsewhere. They organize dropoff and pick up as well from the airport which is amazing. Can't recommend this place enough!

Hope this helps.

Hi Bob! You can find many shops and good restaurants around Muri Beachcomber. Don't miss the night market beside the hotel. Very good street food at cheap price. I don't know the cost of a car because we rented a motorbike, but I don't think it will be expensive. Enjoy the wonderful Rarotonga!

Kia Orana Bob,

Restaurant and cafe in Muri are less than 10minutes in walking distance. Morever when I went there, there was the Muri Night Market just next door on Sunday,Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday from 5.30 pm for delicious local food at great prices. I do not know if there will be still the night market during January tho (but you can have a look). Also if you want to go to Avarua town or somewhere else, there is a bus stop just in front of Muri Beachcomber (which is even TOO EASY, haha).

Enjoyyyyy :)

Hello Bob, You will not be short of options for meals in close proximity to the Beachcomber. There is Mexican, Asian restaurants, a great burger joint - Vilis, across the road. Fine dining at Sails, The Sands & the night markets 4 nights a week. We hired a motor scooter for 7 days = $146, but you need to sit for test at police station if you don't hold motor license in your country. We couldn't get a small hire car at the time & it was going to cost $440 a week for a medium one. There is car hire place, Island car & rental across the road from Beachcomber but you can do better with Avis car hire or could arrange to have one pickup at airport( I think ) Have fun & enjoy Rarotonga.

I agree with previous answers. There are plenty of restaurants at the resorts along the beach, small general stores a few minutes walk & the night food market is next door. Things to remember:

-Muri Beachcomber is self-catering so no restaurant on site;

-check your flight arrival time. If it is after about 10 pm there may be nothing open for dinner so get food on the plane or take something with you!

-it might pay to book a car or scooter in advance because they can get all booked out.

-If you are fit & active Muri Beachcomber has complimentary bicycles for guest use. We are not too fit but managed to cycle a complete lap of the island at leisurely pace.

Rarotonga is a fantastic destination. Enjoy your vacation!

Hi Bob--the previous answer matches my response!!--Muri Beachcomber is so close to food, and the rental services. Perfect place for you--as long as you accept very comfortable but not 5 star. It ticked all our boxes. Mark

Hi Bob

My wife and I stayed there in Aigust and recommend the place- make sure you select a beach front unit to get the most out of it. Muri Beach is the right area to go to, there are a good selection of restaurants and cafes - all very handy. The night market next door also offers a good range of food 3 nights a week. We hired a scooter for $18 per day, not sure what cars are but the scooter is easy to use and a great way for a slow cruise around the island - a lap is about 35km so there is no rush. Enjoy
