We planned to visit Crater Lake and hike the are starting Saturday of this week. We've just become aware of the fires and smoke in the area.
Q- Is the smoke so thick that hiking is not advisable or reasonable?
Q- Does anyone know if other lakes or trails in the area of Kalamath Falls area are another option or also smokey and fires?
Thank you as time is of the essence for planning since we are flying in.
The quickest way to get an objective answer to the air quality question is, imo, to check the three web cams on the Crater Lake National Park website by the NPS (National Park Services). On some days you get a few miles of visibility, on other days only a couple hundred yards. If I were to take a flight for 2+ hours to fly in, I would drive directly to the Pacific coast and hike trails there (Oregon or Northern California).
