What time of the year is the best to take the BearTooth Hwy?
Definitely summer. It closes in sometime in autumn and does not reopen until sometime in spring.
You need to read when it is open. Because of the high altitude it closes a good part of the year. We were there in August and it still has snow on the road side. I would say late July through early September would be the best. No matter when it is beautiful!
I was there in mid June and it was spectacular. The roads were fully open, but there was still a lot of snow up above the tree line. Fantastic experience.
We drove the Beartooth Highway in July and there was still snow on the ground! We loved it, if you are in the area and have the time this is a must drive.
We drove the Beartooth Highway in mid September.
It rained very hard but we still saw the amazing view
and stunning beauty on most of the road. It changed
to very foggy and the visibility is very poor at the last
half hour drive towards Red Lodge. I believe it's very
beautiful no matter what seasons but the weather is
very unpredictable. They might snow in summer.
