How long should we plan on a visit (including transportation from Plaza de Armas in Iquitos)?
Around seven hours total, including travel and visiting time. We went independently, so our procedure involved a private mototaxi to the ferry terminal, public ferry (fixed price, and leaves when full, so you probably would have to wait), private boat to the island, and the visit. We spent a couple of hours, but this was more than adequate for us as some monkeys were in cages and others free to roam but concentrated at the visitors' center. Also, some of the time involved a guided walk through part of the island to see the vegetation, but not more monkeys. Our return involved the reverse procedure. Note that the price for a private mototaxi or private boat is for the trip, not per person. Ensure that you agree on the trip price before embarking. The costs are quite low; however, ask at the hotel what the approximate price should be so that both parties are treated fairly. Making the visit as we did is more time consuming, but cheaper and you see more local life.
I'm not sure since we stayed quite a ways downriver and opposite Monkey Island. Another variable is the boat you hire--a speed boat or a supply ship. That company should be able to answer your question. Paz.
We are staying in Iquitos first, and then at Libertad Jungle Lodge.
Our thoughts were to go to Monkey Island during our stay in Iquitos.
I have a question for you. Are you planning to stay at any of the lodges on the Amazon? A company in Iquitos is Explorama Lodges. Their best lodge by far is Ceiba Tops. It is air conditioned and your private bathroom has hot water ( most lodges on the Amazon don't). It also has a lovely swimming pool. When you stay at the lodges you take boat trips to the various tourists sites such as Monkey Island. I don't know your travel plans, however I would suggest that you check out Explorama Lodges on the internet. The boat ride from Ceiba Tops Lodge to Monkey Island is only 30-45 minutes. The lodge is about one to one and a half hours from Iquitos by boat.
Not much to add to the above answer. I would suggest, however, that if you are going to Monkey Island, you also go the the nearby Animal refuge . It is on anther small tributary of the Amazon---somewhat closer to Iquitos. It too is worth a couple of hours to visit. I am not sure of the entry price since we were on a tour.
At Monkey Island, you need no more than a couple of hours ( maximum) visiting the Monkeys. I'm not aware are other things to see and do on the island. The only way to travel from Iquitos to Monkey Island is by boat on the Amazon. I am not sure how long it takes to travel from Iquitos to Monkey Island but it probably takes a couple of hours each way. Enjoy
