I am considering purchasing the same Groupon deal but I have a question about the local wildlife- spiders specifically. I have a pretty bad phobia of spiders and I know there are some pretty horrendous ones in the lowlands of Costa Rica. Did you encounter any tarantulas/banana spiders etc on the hotel property or on any of the excursions? I need to know what I may be in for ahead of time. Thanks!
We saw a couple big hairy spiders on a nature hike to Rio Celeste. I was surprised that we saw no bugs other than the occasional mosquito at the hotel. Going during the dry season helps, I suppose. Oh, and there are lots of ants. But we only saw the two spiders the whole week--not that we went looking for them!
I don't think I saw a spider the whole time I was there! Mosquitoes and Frogs YES!.... Spiders not during our trip!
On a couple of the hikes the guides tried to lure a tarantula out of its hole just to show us but both times it did not work. They aren't prevalent otherwise.
We only saw one spider on the volcano hike but it was dead.
There are many insects and spiders in Costa Rica, but none that were a problem or were threatening. During our month there we drove all over the country, east, west, north, and south of San Jose. Can't recall many spiders, but saw some interesting insects, i.e. Rhinoceros Beetle outside the breakfast area at the Lavas del Arenal.
