SO....Ive been told that the 89A route is a MUST...BUT you mention 179 ?? Are we able to travel 179 & 89 A or is that ONE OR THE OTHER ???
Well I went up 89 and I'm sorry I didn't go up 179. If I had known the difference then, I would have chosen 179. I would have had more awe seeing Sedona for the first time going north on 179 rather than when I was leaving all that beauty behind me. It seems like if you were going north on 179 your going from kind of nothingness to all these red rock mountains, one after another smack right at you. On 89 it was in the distance and then obscured by downtown. Again, I'd rather see them before me my first day then behind me my last day. My opinion and I stick by it. Don't miss Tlaquepaque - a quaint shopping area and place to eat, beautiful by day and night. It's like being in old town Mexico or a European city. Go back on 89. Enjoy.
If time permits, do both. They intersect in the town of Sedona. 89A goes North to South or visa versa. 179 is West of Sedona
They’re both highways into Sedona. 179 intersects 89A. Both are scenic and have much to see.
You can do both easily going north to south or vise versa depending on where you are coming from. The roads are well marked. I would buy some kind of pass for all the parks so you don't have to pay at each one.
