Is there a time of day that would be best to view them?
I went between 6-8pm. It was cool and damp. There were none around.
Early morning or late on the day
When the sun is out, they like the heat too. So the afternoon would probably be best. Also, they don't come out much when it's cold outside so try to plan your visit during a warmer month
In the summer, I suggest morning (before noon) or evening between 6-8:00 PM.
During the daylight hours for sure since the area really has no lights. But also, the little critters are relatively active all day. Besides this little protected area, prairie dogs have invaded all over Lubbock. There are private areas all over town where they are that is much bigger than the protected area.
We were there in the evening, and they were very active. Our kids loved it!!
Cooler times of day they are more active, however they are hopping in and out of their tunnels all day. Last month the little ones were so adorable to watch! We stayed about 2 hours because we enjoyed watching their social system and how it worked. You can come and see and leave in 5 minutes because there's nothing else to do except watch them if that's more your speed. There are other activities in the park and an amusement park nearby.
I would agree with Denise; early in the morning makes it a lot cooler for both you and the prairie dogs. Right now, it's mega hot and early, early morning is the only time that's even bearable!
Morning or dusk - they don't come out as much during the heat of the day.
Be sure to take something good for them to eat - like veggies - most people feed them junk food so you can see how fat they are.
Early in the morning when cooler.
