Volcano Inn Questions & Answers

Portland, Oregon

How soon would you reserve staying at the Volcano Inn? Would there be a better time to be there than other times, weather wise, or volcano action-wise?? Thanks for the tips!! We'll be there in early January.

All rooms are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. January is a busy month so we recommend you make reservations as soon as you are certain of your dates. It is a bit cooler in January but a fine time to visit Volcanoes National park.

I would book now because you have to call or email and send them a check before you get a confirmation. They were adding rooms to the property when we were there. Temperature doesn't vary much month to month but you will need to bring a jacket as you will be on the rainy side of the island and in the rain forest and it gets cool, especially at night. Great choice on the Volcano Inn, We loved our stay there, especially the hot tub in the evening. The Lava flow is in an area that is still off limits to tourists. If you can, book a helicopter ride from the hilo airport. We took the open door ride and it was fantastic. They take you down to practically on top of the lava. You could actually feel the heat. The Inn is a mile or so from the actual volcano. Best time to view that is at night because during the day all you see is the steam.

Book now... you send them a check in the mail. If you know you are going... secure this room. You won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't wait - when we were there (granted, it was August), they were pretty full. As I understand it, the temperature doesn't vary all that much from month to month, so I would expect temps in the 70s pretty much anytime.

I went in July and I reserved two weeks in advanced. Christmas is a packed season but if you go in January I guess it should be ok. I think temperatures should be around 76 Farenheit. With the recent volcano eruption, I am sure you will see hot lava. You will love Volcano Inn, it is a very cute place in a perfect location. Have fun!
