Would you recommend drive through the park or is it tours only?
It is a tour only - the canyons are on Navajo land so you cannot go unattended
You can only visit the canyons by one of the tours. You cant see the canons from the main road.
The drive is extra bumpy and dusty and nothing to see along the way. The main attraction is at the end of the drive at the canyons. But it's not possible to drive because of the limitation of the tracks and sheer number of visitors going there... hence the organisers need to load up truck loads as a form of efficient transport.
You can drive though the canyon. It’s Indian reservation, so you have to pay to get in and you have to go with guided tour. You can walk around the desert, but you won’t be able to find or get into the canyon. You park your car & take at least 10 minutes to the destination. Might cost but it’s worth it.
